Charlie Parker (as).
Private recording (Acetate) Probably May-November 1940
1. Honeysuckle Rose, Body and Soul (incomplete)
This is probably the earliest known recording of Parker, and the only example of extended unaccompanied playing. The recordings were made by Clarence Davis, probably in May 1940. The canonical version of this fragment is on Media 7 — it is speed-corrected, and earlier issues end at the bridge of "Body and Soul," but this version continues to the end of the chorus. (...) Early sources gave 1937 as the recording date, but this seems unlikely given the quality of Parker's playing. Also, he quotes a snippet of a Roy Eldridge solo from a 1938 Chu Berry recording of "Body and Soul."

Charlie Parker QUINTET
Charlie Parker (as); Miles Davis (tpt); Irving "Duke" Jordan (p); Tommy Potter (b); Max Roach (d); Kenny Hagood (voc).
Private recording (Dean Benedetti tape) Three Deuces, New York NY, March 31, 1948
2. Big Foot
3. 52nd Street Theme
4. 52nd Street Theme
Recorded by Dean Benedetti on a Brush Sound Mirror paper-based tape recorder. This session circulated on tape and then was released on Spotlite before the Benedetti cache was issued by Mosaic. The Mosaic set is sonically better.
The Parker Quintet played three weeks at the Three Deuces (March 30-April 11). After this, Davis played a week at the Apollo Theater with "Symphony Sid's Bop Concert," an all-star band including Kay Winding [sic], Allen Eager, Milt Jackson, Tadd Dameron, Curly Russell, Max Roach, and Earl Coleman. The same group was booked at the Royal Roost beginning April 23.

Private recording (Dean Benedetti tape) Onyx Club, New York NY, July 11, 1948
5. How High The Moon
Recorded by Dean Benedetti.
The Parker Quintet was booked at the Onyx Club for six nights, July 6-11 (Tuesday-Sunday). The Benedetti material issued by Mosaic includes parts of at least four of these nights (July 6, 7, 10, and 11), plus a bit of an afternoon rehearsal (July 10).
While they're certainly important, these recordings are disappointing, especially compared to those made earlier at the Three Deuces. The fidelity is quite poor throughout, and the items are all edited one way or another.

Charlie Parker WITH STRINGS
Charlie Parker (as); Walter Bishop, Jr. (p); Walter Yost (b); Roy Haynes (d); Candido Camero (cga); Teddy Blume (vln); Unknown (strings).
WNBC radio broadcast Carnegie Hall, New York, November 14, 1952
6. Just Friends
7. Just Friends
8. Strings Theme
"Yardbird Charlie Parker and His Strings" played two concerts on this date (8:30 pm and midnight), sharing the bill with Duke Ellington Orchestra, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and the Ahmad Jamal Trio. WNBC broadcast both concerts with introductions by Bob Garrity.
There is clearly some additional material from this early show, but it has not surfaced so far. In addition to the "Just Friends" listed here, Philology Volume 1/4 contains an off-speed version of "Just Friends" and an excerpt of the "Strings Theme," both from the later concert.

Charlie Parker TRIO
Charlie Parker Trio
Charlie Parker (as); Lennie Tristano (p); Kenny Clarke (brushes).
Private recording (Tape) Lennie Tristano's house, New York NY, August 1951
9. All Of Me
10. I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me
Both items included (with a heavy-handed rhythm section dubbed in) in Clint Eastwood's film, Bird: The Legend of Charlie Parker. Too bad Tristano and Parker's paths didn't cross more often.

11. Dexterity
12. The Way You Look Tonight
Very fragmentary; edited to Parker solos for the most part. These may be dubs of wire recordings — the fidelity is very poor throughout.
Although these tunes are usually dated (as on Philology) in December 1947, this is doubtful. The Parker Quintet was booked for two weeks at Chicago's Argyle Show Lounge (November 11-23, 1947), then for four nights at the Pershing Hotel Ballroom (January 3-6, 1948). The group played a Saturday night dance at the New Savoy Ballroom on January 3, and two items from this date appear on Philology Volume 14.
Three other tunes — "Barbados," a longer version of "Embraceable You," and "How High the Moon" — are usually listed with these tunes (as e.g. on Philology Volumes 1/4), but they are probably from the Pershing Hotel Ballroom, March 28-April 10, 1949, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet. Two of these items are issued on Philology Volume 14, although the speed is different and "Embraceable You" is incomplete. But the music is the same.

13. Barbados
Very fragmentary; edited to Parker solos for the most part. These may be dubs of wire recordings — the fidelity is quite poor throughout, and there are serious speed and pitch fluctuations.
I'm unsure of both the date and the personnel for this session. Most discographies place these tunes in November 1947, with Parker, Davis, Jordan, Potter, and Roach. Since that group was booked at the Argyle Lounge for two weeks during that period — November 11-23, 1947 — this is possible. That group also played the Pershing Ballroom in Chicago on January 3-6, 1948, and the tunes might be from that sesssion. Nevertheless, I'm convinced these items are from later. Frank Loesser's tune "On a Slow Boat to China" wasn't copyrighted until 1948, and "Barbados" wasn't recorded in the studio until the Savoy date on September 18, 1948. It's unusual for a Parker tune to appear in the live repertoire before it has been recorded. Further, Parker's quotations and his playing (especially during his solo on the second "Slow Boat to China" ) sound like 1949, not 1947. Finally, to my ears the trumpet player sounds like Kenny Dorham, not Davis. The Parker Quintet (with Dorham, Haig, Potter, and Roach, and guest vocalist Arthur Daniels) played a two-week engagement at Chicago's Pershing Hotel Ballroom from March 28-April 10, 1949, and my guess is that these tunes were recorded during this gig. Thanks to Phil Wilson for help on this session.

23. This Time The Dream's On Me
Very poor quality — lots of crowd noise and echo, as if the recorder were well back in a large crowded hall. Edited to Parker solos and exchanges throughout. Another hour of music from this date (these dates?) is rumored to exist.
The music issued on Philology is consistently about a half-step flat. The trumpet player is listed as unknown on Philology, but the trumpet solos (e.g. on "Steeplechase" and "Wee" ) sound like Rodney, and Parker's "Country Gardens" tags fit with this.
It's Not Hi-Fi Bird, But It's Hi Bird!
