Об исполнителе (группе)
Frederick Knight (born August 15, 1944, Birmingham, Alabama) is an American R&B singer, songwriter and record producer.
Knight recorded with Mercury and Capitol in New York before signing with Stax Records in 1972. He had his only UK hit single, "I've Been Lonely For So Long," in 1972. The song was on the chart for 10 weeks and reached number 22. Lack of further chart activity leaves him labelled as a one-hit wonder. However, Knight did appear in the documentary film, Wattstax, which was released in 1973.
After Stax's demise Knight launched Juana Records, writing and producing The Controllers, and he had a UK Number 1 chart credit with Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" in 1979. Knight cut "I've Been Lonely for So Long" in Birmingham, Alabama, with a seasoned southern soul crew behind him, and hit again in 1975 with "I Betcha Didn't Know That."
The song "Be For Real", written by Knight and originally performed by Marlena Shaw, was covered by Leonard Cohen for his album The Future and subsequently by The Afghan Whigs for the movie Beautiful Girls.

Об альбоме (сборнике)
Frederick Knight may be mostly known for penning Anita Ward's massive "Ring My Bell" in 1979, the Alabamian was a multi-talented soul singer, writer, musician, arranger and producer who never preferred a singing career, but wound up churning out one of Southern Soul's most appetizing album, aptly released by Stax.
"I've Been Lonely for So Long," the Top 10 R&B-hit and title track, has a peculiar history to it. Having originally written it for someone else, Knight decided to lay down a rough version of it using acoustic guitars, bass, hi-hat drums and a wooden plank thumping on top off a bar-stool. Overdubbing his own vocals (harmonies, high falsetto, bass leads and in-song spoken intermezzo), Knight created a multi-layered, warm, delightful soul venture that has rightfully become a classic within the genre.
But in all honesty, the entire album (his only one for Stax) is a masterpiece of deep Soul, funky rhythms, quirky beats and snappy lyrics. The laid-back, deliciously groovy "This Is My Song of Love to You", sung for his wife Posie, adds the slightest amount of strings while it gently sails along.
"Take Me on Home Witcha" - my personal favorite - further demonstrates Knight's knack for churning out incredibly catchy, addictive tunes. Killer hooks, fatback mid-tempo beat and beautifully orchestrated, it mixes the down-home grit of Memphis-by-way-of-Alabama soul and the right amount of tasteful, subdued gloss.
The same goes for the wistful, brooding "Friend," where a slight folksy feel is evident, whereas "I Let My Chance Go By" firmly focuses on a funky, soulful groove, augmented with plenty of horns.
The Funk becomes apparent on "Your Love's All Over Me", a greasy, incisive stomper complete with spoken interlude and piercing guitars, as well as on the dynamic "Pick'um Up, Put'um Down", a song deriding gossiping. Once again, Knight adds several of his own vocals, creating an infectious chorus that fully showcases the man's incredible voice.
The smooth, delicate "Now That I've Found You" features more vocal acrobatics (with Knight providing his own 'shoo-wops'), while a lazy, tambourine-shaking country-barn groove plods on behind him, until it goes into double-time on the outro.
Simmering strings open the hard socking "Lean on Me", a wonderfully chorded, uplifting little tune that includes soothing gospel piano and nice female backing vocals.
"Trouble" is a funky beater, a little in the mold of "I've Been Lonely for So Long"; a heavy, densely layered groover that sets the stage for more of Knight's creative singing. Although it failed as a single, the track was soon covered by such acts as King Floyd and Ry Cooder.
The LP ends with an updated, blues-rocking cover of the Moonglows' "Someday We'll Be Together," the perfect climax to a rich, warm and interminably soulful album.
