In a trio date with pianist Wayne Peet and bassist Ken Filiano, Golia tackles seven of his own compositions that firmly straddle the lines of classical, jazz and world music, utilizing a bewildering variety of wind instruments. Through the course of the CD, Golia's endlessly flexible embouchure can be heard coping easily with the diverse demands of the piccolo, alto and bass flutes, sopranino, soprano and baritone saxes, bassoon, bass clarinet, Japanese folk flute and shakuhachi, and pan pipes! The compositions are usually abstract and moody, sometimes directionless and self-indulgent, always allergic to predictable structures and developments, outfitted with titles that border on the Zappa-esque ("Walter's Mysterious Feelings," "The Disbelief of Kathy Hunt"). "Ostio-Bronti (For Franz Kafka)" is the closest the collection comes to a jazz pulse, with a uniquely quirky theme and swinging, often atonal improvisations. As is often the case on Nine Winds, there are no liner notes about the music -- as if that would help.
