Return from the center of the earth est le second album du quartet Inner Ear, une formation internationale composée par Mikołaj Trzaska (saxophone alto & clarinette basse, de Pologne), Steve Swell (trombone, des Etats-Unis), Per-Åke Holmlander (tuba, de Suède) et Tim Daisy (batterie, des Etats-Unis). Ce quartet propose une musique pas très loin de la musique improvisée, mais qui est plutôt proche du free jazz, du free jazz comme le label polonais bocian a l'habitude d'en proposer, c'est-à-dire du free jazz de qualité.
En une trentaine de minutes, Inner Ear propose seulement trois pièces, improvisées la plupart du temps, mais très bien structurées j'ai envie de dire. Le groupe ne joue pas sur une puissance constante, mais alterne les improvisations libres collectives, les improvisations jazz, rythmiques et lyriques sur fond de pattern au tuba et à la batterie, les duo plus posés, les improvisations plutôt nerveuses, puis mélodiques, et rythmiques, ou plus sonores. Les différents modes d'improvisation sont très bien équilibrés, et l'interaction entre les membres de cette formation est très juste, l'écoute est toujours attentive, et surtout, quelque soit le mode de jeu et d'improvisation, Inner Ear y met toujours toute son énergie et sa passion.
Du bon gros free très inspiré et frais notamment grâce à l'instrumentation neuve des cuivres graves (notamment le tuba) qui assurent aussi la section rythmique avec puissance et entrain, mais aussi inspiré par le jazz et le swing, avec des accents un peu binaire et rock par moment pour bien pulser le tout. Chaque membre sait toujours soutenir la musique de manière adéquate, par la présence, l'absence, l'accompagnement ou la discrétion selon les moments. Du free bien dansant, énergique, passionné et inspiré en somme.
