This is the second recording on Leo Records of the highly regarded Dolmen Orchestra from southern Italy. Like its predecessor, Sequenze Armoniche (Some Gregorian Reflections), this one is characterized by strong, serious writing, excellent soloing, and a diversity of styles. Minotrauma is distinguished, too, by the presence of guest French trombonist Yves Robert, who is featured throughout. Robert, who sits in the top tier worldwide of modern stylists on his instrument, is clearly indebted to the seminal work of American trombonist, George Lewis, and the Frenchman adds immeasurably to the success of the instant project with his remarkably fluent performances. Three of the tracks are "conductions," a methodology of free composition first pioneered by Lawrence "Butch" Morris. The others weave in and out of melodic frameworks, sometimes sounding relatively tame, and at others exploring more adventurous terrain. Leader and organizer Nicola Pisani conducts most of the pieces and contributed several of them. The orchestra is a tight unit, with complex, layered arrangements, and if it lacks some of the humor indigenous to its sister and better-known Italian Instabile Ensemble, the Dolmen Orchestra manages to find its own, slightly more rigid, though equally artistic, sound. Cristina Zavalloni's voice is a constant presence, often mimicking a horn. Whether she adds or detracts form the end result is a matter of taste. Those who enjoy George Lewis' work with the Now Orchestra (for example, The Shadowgraph Series: Compositions for Creative Orchestra) should appreciate this project and find it challenging and largely fulfilling.
