PETER O’MARA is a guitar player, composer, lecturer and author. The Australian has been living in Munich for several years. He has collaborated with Randy Brecker, David Friedman, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Charlie Mariano, Bob Mintzer, Kenny Wheeler et al.

MIRAGE is Peter O’Maras most recent album. It celebrates melodic jazz music beguiling with its rich atmospheric images. Peter O’Mara has been dealing with the strains of the guitar for a long time. “Wang Thang” starts as a reference to history, with a short drum intro in the tradition of the Marching Bands, drifting to a settled and freely flowing New Orleans rhythm right on time. Adam Nussbaum on the drums creates a spatial profundity, letting off vigorous fireworks of enunciation, protracting the rhythm with a distinct groove. The well tuned melodies of Peter O’Mara’s electric guitar are developing incredibly calm, almost languidly and as if under blue skies into artful improvisations. In a hot summer’s day atmosphere, against a horizon turning into shimmering spots of color, his melodies exert a hypnotic suction, turning the song into a powerful, richly colored energy flow with vibrations of its own. The song “Mirage” – rhythm in uneven meters and impressively reiterating bass lines – creates a calm, airy and orientalizing atmosphere. The smooth, clearly improvising riffs of the electric guitar are penetrating the rhythmically opened room in a reflection of wide and inner worlds, as if it were a whirling dervish’s dance played in slow-motion. Played in echoing “sound shadows” discretely amplify the sound in certain parts, adding to it an iridescent and hybrid feature. Absolutely wonderful. Cole Porter’s “Just One Of Those Things” is one of the few standard tunes on this CD. It presents itself as up-tempo-swing with Henning Sievert’s artistically rushing bass riffs. Peter O’Mara on
electric guitar develops very expressive city sketches in blue and gray, describing virtuously changing street panoramas and rapid motions through space, creating a concise, atmospherically compact row of anecdotic tales. In this tune guitar and bass form pursuing, losing each other, overlapping and reappearing lines full of suspense – New York sunset light. One of the tunes is dedicated to the saxophone player and composer Frank St. Peter. “For Frank” is a slow and melancholy ballad played on acoustic guitar, full of long improvisations, with a multitude of various atmospheres, with complex and warm tones and tricky changes of harmony. Anyone who can produce such weightless music needn’t prove himself. Peter O’Mara’s album “MIRAGE” was produced shortly before the trio’s tour. Like all PIROUET productions it was recorded live. Most of the tunes were composed by Peter O’Mara.
