Sometimes the degree of formal mastery attained by young musicians is impressive, and it is one of the first things we notice with these two. Which is a good sign.
Of course, Rocky and Adrien are hardly unknown in the industry - they have both recorded a first album, and for this label. But this one, a duo recording recorded around the same time as the solo ones -- is just as innovative and pleasing.
The Reinhardtian connection is acknowledged and approached with a delightful freedom, with a singularly elegant form of distancing: the album opens with a wonderful cover of Belleville. Moignard and Gresset have held on to the best parts of their relationship to Django, beginning with their unwavering commitment to the acoustic instrument, as well as their use of the consummate art of musical conversation, holding their own even against musical elders such as Biréli Lagrène and Sylvain Luc.
Each, according to his nature, finds his footing and stakes his claim: the roundness and sustained harmony of the warm nylon strings for Rocky, the pleasing mix of edge and subtlety accompanied by the brilliance of steel strings for Adrien. Their takes on the most well-known, important standards, Bluesette, Misty, My Funny Valentine, are veritable milestones, because of the freshness of their approach as well as the sureness of their instinct. As for the originality of their thematic palette, beyond a pronounced preference by both artists for melody (with help from Luis Salinas, Aldo Romano and the Bee Gees), it also speaks to the breadth of their musical vision as well as to their admirably open minds.
And the virtuosity of their guitar playing never compromises the beauty of this balance.
