Afro-Cuban/jazz percussionist Steve Berrios' second outing as a leader finds him exploring a variety of sources and moods, from an intriguing, spare, rhythmic duo (with soprano sax) on Monk's "Bemsha Swing," to the Latin swing and warm brass voicings of "Homenaje a un Trovador." From the opening notes of the CD, and even allowing for some overdubbing, it is delightfully surprising how full and complex a music he produces from such small ensembles. Too often, "Latin jazz" represents neither genre particularly well. Berrios proves that, in the right hands, it starts with the best of both worlds and takes flight.
