Blue Note continues its stellar compilation ways on this Latin jazz sampler, spotlighting both stateside jazzers and salsa kings. The focus is on the '60s and early '70s and the boogaloo rarely loses its sophisticated dance groove over the course of the collection's 15 tracks. On the jazz end of the spectrum, Blue Note stalwart Bobby Hutcherson is tapped for a few tasty sides, while Les McCann, Charles Kynard, Buddy Collette, the Jazz Crusaders, and Clare Fischer all deliver fine work. For somewhat more "authentic" fare, Latin stars -- via New York -- like Machito, Candido, Jack Costanzo, and Willie Bobo bring the home-cooked flavors to the fore. A fine disc for Latin jazz newbies.
