about
I heard a five-minute clip of Life Is a Beautiful Monster, a live-in-the-studio free-improv fusion blowout, on a CD sampler that came with The Wire magazine. It was compelling enough to set me on a year-long, off-and-on search for this album at non-import prices — easier said than done, as it turned out. I finally snagged it off of eBay, and found it worth the wait.
Dominated by the seven-part title piece, Life Is a Beautiful Monster features a ten-piece band that includes five horns but, if anything, is heaviest on the low end, with lots of rock-based drumming, throbbing electric bass, and distorted electronics. The overall vibe is one of intense, densely textured fusion with an almost space-rockish mentality. There's not much in the way of lengthy soloing, with the notable exception of a blazing tenor solo that takes up the first half of the third track; instead, there's a lot of free-form blowing on top of a wickedly grooving "rhythm and noise" (to borrow a term from Rova:rkestrova) section. The composed heads, such as they are, involve a lot of quick unison horn lines, but aside from a few phrases at the beginning and end of some tracks, this seems almost entirely freely improvised.
Everywhere you turn while listening to this album, there's high-energy free blowing, except for the centerpiece 22-minute "Part 4." The first two-thirds of this track consists of fairly restrained, eerily ambient spaciness, heavy on the obtuse electronics and long, droning notes. Slowly and inexorably it builds, though, to one of the most chaotically satisfying climaxes on the record (and there's some solid competition there). It's delightful stuff. Impressively, the latter half of the album after this dramatic climax doesn't take down the pace or intensity; in fact, "Part 5" features one of the band's heaviest grooves. These guys are in take-no-prisoners mode throughout.
To make an overly glib comparison to the most obvious of reference points, imagine if Miles Davis in his fusion period became enamored of collective improv of, say, John Coltrane's Ascension. You get both the dirty, funky beats of the former as well as the chaotic, joyful noise of the latter. It's no surprise, then, that I for one found this album well worth searching out.

An amazing little group -- one that starts with the ensemble improvisation energy of John Coltrane's Ascension, but then takes off into a whole new electrified direction of its own! Crimetime Orchestra boast a heady rhythm section in the form of Bugge Wesseltoft on keyboards, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums -- all players schooled in free jazz ways, but working here with an electrified sort of force -- almost a rockish fusion undercurrent, which is mixed beautifully with the complicated horn lines of the other members of the group. Bassist Bjornar Andressen brings in a double-heavy bottom to the record -- and other players include Vidar Johansen on tenor, Jon Klette on alto, Djetil Moster on tenor, Oyvind Brakke on trombone, Sjur Miljeteig on trumpet, and Anders Hana on guitar. Bugge recorded the whole thing, with some additional electric effects -- and titles include "Rest In Piece" and the seven-part "Live Is A Beautiful Monster" suite. © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
Crimetime Orchestra is a ten-piece improv collective that includes such key players as drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft and saxophonist Vidar Johansen. This is also the very last recording which double bass icon Bjørnar Andresen contributed to. Sadly, the free improv pioneer passed away three weeks after recording ‘Life is a beautiful monster’. Crimetime Orchestra grab you by the scruff of the neck, slams you into walls of sound, then releases you in punch-drunk euphoria. This is full-contact music, not appropriate for a dinner party but perfect for times when life seems a bit mundane. It’s brutal; it’s out there but after all Crimetime Orchestra is, just as life, a beautiful monster.
