Comprised of members Oluyemi Thomas (bass clarinet, sax, flute), Ijeoma Thomas (vocals), Bruce Eisenbeil (guitar), Wilbur Morris (bass), and Michael Wimberly (drums), the Oakland, California-based Positive Knowledge is a jazz-fusion outfit that issued a few released during the late '90s. Most of its members' names may sound familiar to modern day jazz buffs, as they've been involved in numerous other projects (the group's leader, Thomas, was once quoted in the British magazine 'The Wire' as being "one of North America's preeminent bass clarinetists"). Thomas is also a published author/poet who has issued releases on the Music & Arts label (the same label that issues Positive Knowledge's recordings). Additionally, Eisenbeil has issued several albums on his own (plus playing with countless others), Morris has recorded with the likes of David Murray, Ken McIntyre, Borah Bergman, and Rashied Ali, while Wimberly has recorded/toured with Steve Coleman, David Murray, and Charles Gayle, plus rock artists Henry Rollins, Mickey Hart, and Vernon Reid.

Writes jazz critic Dan Ouellette in his liner notes, "The pieces are inspirited with bursts of passionate joy and jolts of anguished urgency...Ijeoma offers percussive tremors and radiant vocal word play; Oluyemi launches into ecstatic swells of creative revelry and muses with low-toned turbulences on his array of horns (bass and alto clarinets, C-melody and soprano saxophones, musette), and Spirit thunders and caresses his drums in support. They collaborate with a highly personal touch where conversations bloom into feasts of praise and where risk-taking means trusting each other's intuitive design to take the compositions into new region." The ensemble was highly praised by Anthony Braxton, with whom Oluyemi Thomas had studied in Oakland for a number of years. The first CD of Positive Knowledge on Music & Arts (MACD-842) (Another Day's Journey) received critical acclaim in American and Japanese journals.
