Доп. информация
Sound in action. These three words speak volumes about this trio’s trust in the currencies of movement and momentum. One look at the instrumentation and it’s obvious that the rhythmic possibilities for the group go well beyond the parameters prescribed by usual jazz instrumentation. Two drum kits, one reed; but not just any two drummers and definitely not your run-of-the-mill reed player. Ken Vandermark’s musical directions have long been built on restless and prolific experimentation, a constant forward velocity of ideas and endeavors. This project is no different in the degree of creativity and initiative that went into it’s realization. In many ways it mirrors musically the momentum of Vandermark’s own imagination. Where it veers off in brilliantly unpredictable directions is in the uniquely conceived interactions between it’s three participants.
Mulvenna is often Vandermark’s drummer of choice, showing up behind the trap set in a number of his numerous groups. His touch on the skins can command a quiet resolve or a boisterous clamor with equal facility. Barry’s presence is the real surprise. An Arkestra alumnus whose absence from the recording studio has fortunately not been followed by sabbatical from playing, Barry’s percussive precision is legendary. Best of all his role in this trio is as a fully integrated member rather than simply a prestigious guest star and he and Mulvenna (who it turns out, is also his sometime student) spin a web of rhythms that is unearthly in its symmetry. Given the solid rhythmic foundry the two afford him, Vandermark is free to cut loose at will on both tenor and clarinet, but unexpectedly he often opts on the side of restraint. His decision is a shrewd move and rightly places the textural emphasis on the intricate interplay between all three players, particularly the drummers.
The compositions are an eclectic bag brimming with both originals and carefully conceived readings of post-bop classics from the likes of Ra, Ayler, Monk and Coleman. As is often his practice Vandermark dedicates each of the original pieces to one of the myriad musicians he admires- in this case and for obvious reasons they’re all drummers. The trio project itself is in many ways a dedicatory gesture to Barry and his lasting, if lesser known, influence on creative improvised music. This group’s longevity may be uncertain given the sometimes fickle nature of Vandermark’s muse, but based on this debut recording Delmark would be well served by organizing their return engagement to the recording studio so that listeners will have even more to enjoy.
Recorded: July 6 & 7, 1999, Airwave Studios, Chicago, IL.
Об исполнителе (группе)
Ken Vandermark was recognized for an astounding decade of music-making by receiving the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant. He helped to revive Chicago's reputation as a hub of improvised music and to attract a new, young audience to adventurous jazz nationwide. Vandermark has participated in many projects, including: Vandermark Quartet, NRG Ensemble, Steam, DKV Trio, and Vandermark 5. So it should come as no surprise that his debut as leader on Delmark finds him fronting another new project. While forging a sound of the future Vandermark has retained a healthy respect for his musical elders, and the Sound in Action Trio (featuring Vandermark on tenor sax and clarinet) is built around one of them; former Sun Ra drummer Robert Barry.
Об альбоме (сборнике)
Except in Chicago, where a tiresome chauvinism permeates the flacking of its new jazz and improvised music scene, the awarding of a MacArthur fellowship to Ken Vandermark in 1999 was met with utter surprise, if not jibes about an inside job at the Chicago-based foundation. Certainly, Vandermark has done the hard work necessary to build a thriving scene in Chicago, and juggle a gaggle of bands and projects to create high international name recognition for himself and his cohorts. Yet, next to previous MacArthur fellows like Max Roach and Cecil Taylor, Vandermark is a youngblood, an impression reinforced by his flat-topped image of '90s cool and a discography roughly split between obviously durable work and recordings of mere passing interest.
Design in Time, however, has the gravity Vandermark now needs to rebuff the skeptics. Much of the initial buzz surrounding this album centers on Robert Barry, drummer for the Sun Ra Arkestra in the '50s, whose presence extends the laudable thread in Vandermark's activities of working with elders of the music like Fred Anderson and Joe McPhee. Yet, the real story is Vandermark. If playing solo is, as often stated, like working a high-wire without a net, venturing out with arrangements for a single horn and two drummers adds a bed of spikes to the simile. (The other percussionist is frequent Vandermark collaborator Tim Mulvenna, who has the cross-rhythm tag-team thing with Barry down cold.) To compound the danger, Vandermark calls a taxing lot of chestnuts and minor classics-three by Ornette Coleman, and one each by Thelonious Monk, Ra, Albert Ayler, and Don Cherry-in addition to four engaging compositions of his own.
Vandermark's command of the album's titular proposition elevates the program far above a blowing session or an off-center spin on repertory. It is interesting and encouraging how this manifests on tenor outings like Coleman's "Law Years" and Vandermark's "One More Once" as a Sonny Rollins-like ease in moving from one idea to the next. Vandermark's growing sophistication as a clarinetist, evidenced by the airy, dancing quality at the top of Cherry's "The Thing" and the nonchalance of "Peace," provides a strong, contrasting palette to the program. Subsequently, ecstatic forays like Ayler's "Angels" are more cogent than on Vandermark-led or co-led dates where full-bore intensity constitutes the bulk of the program.
Still, the more deliberate performances-particularly originals like the lulled, lyrical "Well Suited" and the sprightly shuffling "Cut to Fit"-argue best that Vandermark's award was a prescient act instead of a case of trend spotting, or something more jaundiced.
