In June, the trio, along with their energizing promoter Maya Homburger (an accomplished musician in her own right), spent four days of rest and invention at the Cadence Building. During that time they acclimated after a transatlantic flight, hiked, ate, read, ate, played waterball, ate, and in general made themselves at home in an environment that welcomed them. During this time they also performed an informal concert with a few invited guests. Northern New York, at the time, was at the beginning of a summer-long heat wave and by 7 p.m., when the session began, the temperature was 80°. For sound considerations, fans had to be turned off or moved out of hearing range, windows remained open, inviting the area's abundant bird population to sing themselves into digital immortality. The room quieted and I introduced and welcomed the group to The Spirit Room. Acknowledged, the triowelcomed us with Not Yet. The first set ended over two hours later, the sun had set but the temperature had cooled little in the still air. After some wandering, refreshments, and congenial intermingling, Evan called a second set which was brief, provided continued energy but little heat. The band again called an intermission perhaps in an attempt to regenerate. At this point, Evan Parker turned to Joe McPhee (who had recently finished a tour in Europe with Parker and had driven almost 300 miles to hear this session) and asked him if he had brought his instruments and would he like to join thethird set. Half an hour later Parker, Guy, Lytton, and McPhee took their places and in a diffuse dimness ripped off a jam they titled Then Paul saw the Snake (for Susan), a tribute to a nurturing and an accomplished cook who resides in the area.
After the evening's music, Joe McPhee took me asideand said, This is amazing. This is the real deal. It doesn't happen that often. It was a special time and what you have here is some of the best of it.
