This live set with Brötzmann, Marco Eneidi, Lisle Ellis, and Jackson Krall took place at the Spruce Street Gallery in San Diego in the spring of 2002, on the heels of the four-day Glenn Spearman Music Festival in Oakland. There, over the course of four days, the musicians collaborated together in a variety of contexts (though not as a quartet), so when they hit the stage in San Diego, they were charged. From the first molten notes, the empathy between the group members is readily apparent.
Eneidi’s playing is often compared to Jimmy Lyons, his acknowledged mentor. And while Eneidi’s quicksilver alto lines certainly reflect Lyons’ influence, there is a hard-edged brightness to his playing that gives it a readily identifiable sound. Here, his angular jabs are the perfect foil to Brötzmann’s commanding roar, building with mounting energy into exclamatory flurries. Brötzmann joins in with hypercharged vigor, surging alongside Eneidi with blazing intensity.
Eneidi and Krall have been working together for over two decades, hooking up when the reed player first ventured to New York in the early 80s and their playing is totally synched. The drummer drives the music with a spirited force that courses like churning waves beneath the horns. Ellis is one of the overlooked masters of free jazz bass playing, and here he anchors the unit and propels it along with dark muscular lines that bound across the drummer’s free rhythms. Over the five untitled pieces, the quartet coalesces around the stabbing themes and stokes them to awesome crescendos. What could easily fall into simply a full-tilt blowing session rises to an exuberant collective celebration.
