The musical relationship between Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim was a very important one in the careers of both men. Jobim was, of course, the premier composer of bossa nova, and Mendes was one of the most important popularizers of Brazilian music, helping to bring Jobim's compositions to a very wide audience. Mendes recorded 11 of Jobim's songs overthe course of his first two Atlantic Records albums. The Beat of Brazil and The Swinger From Rio, Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, the latter of which is reissued here. On Mendes' breakthrough album for A&M, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, he included the Jobim classics "One Note Samba/Spanish Flea" and "Agua De Beber (Agwa Gee Beberr)"; on its follow-up. Equinox, he recorded the newly composed "Wave" and "Triste."
Jobim arranged The Beat Of Brasil for Mendes The IP was recorded in Brazil in 1963 although, apparently, it was not released in the U.S. until '67, after the first major success of Brasil 'вв. The Swinger From Rio was recorded in New York in December of '64 and issued Stateside in '65. It represents the only existing example of Mendes and Jobim performing together on record.
An interesting discographical sidenote to this album: The same material was first recorded for Atlantic in June of '64, also with Jobim on guitar on some tracks, Hubert Laws on flute on some tracks, Tiao Netto on bass, and Chico DeSouza on drums. This earlier session was presumably rejected and, unfortunately, most likely lost in a fire that destroyed Atlantic's New Jersey tape-storage facility in 1976.
