Some jazz improvisers prefer to have the same combination of instruments on most or all of their albums. There are acoustic pianists who only want to play in a traditional piano trio consisting of piano, bass, and drums; there are trumpeters who stick to a trumpet-sax-rhythm section format and want nothing more and nothing less. Other improvisers, however, like having different combinations of instruments on different albums, and Joe Morris is a perfect example. The avant-garde guitarist has led a wide variety of groups over the years; Camera finds him leading a quartet that employs Katt Hernandez on violin, Junko Fujiwara Simons on cello, and Luther Gray on drums. And having a quartet that is 75-percent string instruments and 25-percent drums gives Camera slight hints of chamber music at times, although "slight" is the operative word. Camera has a bit of Euro-classical appeal, but there is no overlooking the fact that this is edgy, free jazz. Morris thrives on the abstract, and he thrives on a stream of consciousness approach. But for all its intellect, Camera also has a great deal of passion. Morris' playing is quite focused on cerebral offerings such as "Evocative Shadow," "Patterns on Faces," "Angel of Incidence," and "Reflected Object." Saying that Morris' playing is both stream of consciousness and focused might sound like a contradiction, but it isn't. As outside and freeform as this 2010 session is, Morris obviously went into the studio knowing what he wanted, and he didn't want to throw things up against the wall randomly and see if perhaps they might stick. Camera has more of a sense of purpose than that, and while the end results fall short of essential, this is still a lively, stimulating effort from Morris.

Самосовершенствование на этой стезе проходило через множество концертов, сыгранных вместе с другими студентами во время учебы Джо в Йельском университете. По окончании его в 1975 году Моррис обосновался в Бостоне, где много выступал, стал сооснователем Boston Improvisers Group (BIG), организовал свой лейбл Riti, на котором и записал первую пластинку "Wraparound" (1983). Джо Моррис — один из самых бескомпромиссных авангардных джазовых гитаристов. Его стихия — тотальный фри-джаз, свободный от каких бы то ни было структур и внешних схем. Спонтанная коллективная импровизация, выражающая мгновенные смены эмоционального состояния, изменения потока мыслей, всплески бессознательного... чистая, “незапятнанная” мелодией и гармонией экспрессия.
Интересно, что сам Моррис не только не чурается слова “джаз”, которое так недолюбливают многие его коллеги — импровизаторы-авангардисты, но сам впрямую говорит, что играет именно джазовую музыку. По его мнению, современный джаз предполагает прежде всего сиюминутную оригинальность мышления. То есть джазовый музыкант, в отличие от прочих, в каждое мгновение посредством звуков передает слушателям свои собственные эмоции, не заложенные изначально композитором в конкретной пьесе, а именно те, которые исполнитель переживает сам.
Но здесь существуют разные пропорции: можно добавлять собственные чувства и ощущения к какой-то мелодической и гармонической структуре, импровизируя все же на основе чего-то изначально понятного большинству слушателей, а можно презреть это большинство и обращаться к тому незначительному меньшинству, которое не нуждается ни в какой смысловой “подпорке”. Так сказать, заняться чистой креативностью в надежде на то, что течение эмоций и ход мысли музыканта совпадает с кем-то из слушающих. В конце концов оно так и происходит, вот только совпадение это наблюдается нечасто. В итоге не должно удивлять то, что количество публики в клубе на концерте исполнителя вроде Джо Морриса порой бывает немногим больше количества музыкантов на сцене.
Критика потом ахает и охает, сетуя на то, что интереснейшие музыкальные идеи пропадают втуне, а глупый зритель валом валит слушать заигранную “до дыр” традицию. Зря ахает — люди эти не тупы и не равнодушны. Просто они хотят наслаждаться джазом, отдыхая, а для того, чтобы воспринять творчество Джо Морриса и иже с ним, нужно изрядно поработать мозгами. Да еще и подготовку иметь соответствующую. А это трудно. Поэтому авангард ВСЕГДА останется в меньшинстве. (Борис Аркадьев)
