Об исполнителе (группе)
In an artistic career that spans over twentyfive years, Andrea Centazzo has given more than 1000 concerts and live performances in Europe and the United States, as well as having appeared and performed on numerous radio and television broadcasts. He has recorded over 60 LP's and CD's, and has authored 350 compositions and eight musicology books. His musical endeavors and creative expression range from the sublime to the passionate, from lyric opera to orchestral symphony and solo percussion. He has performed in momentous festivals as soloist of his own compositions or as conductor of symphonic orchestras. Centazzo is a pioneer of contemporary percussion. In the early years, he performed with some of the greatest avant-garde soloists and composers, including J. Zorn, S. Bussotti, S. Lacy, D. Cherry, A. Mangellsdorf, E. Parker, etc. Deservedly, Centazzo has received a number of prestigious music and video Awards (Premio Speciale della Critica Discografica Italiana, USA Downbeat Poll, International Video Festival Tokyo, Prix Arcanal of French Culture, etc.) A doctoral graduate in musicology, he has taught seminars and workshops in Europe and the USA. Since 1983, Centazzo has been dedicated to creating multi-media experiences. This expansion began with an exhibition of his scores rendered as painted ideograms, and evolved into video performances combining both live performance with video images. These efforts culminated in his directing award-winning videos and films. As a soundtrack composer, he unites traditional instrumentation with current technological advances in musical expression through sampling machines and computers. These efforts give a new perspective to the fusion of sound and image through his theatre, television, video, CD rom, and feature film scores. The music of A.C. captures and expresses the rhythm and pulse of life by synthesizing the mystery of Oriental percussive vibrations with the timbral harmonic understanding of contemporary music and the soul of jazz and rock post-culture. A.C. continues to contribute his unique artistic vision to the evolution of contemporary culture.

Об альбоме (сборнике)
Situations represents material culled from the archives of percussionist Andrea Centazzo's old 'ICTUS' label. The previously unreleased tracks, titled 'Situations: 'I-VII', were recorded in 1982, featuring trumpeter/flugelhornist Franz Koglmann, soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill and Centazzo as this multinational aggregation of modern jazz/improvising superstars pursue a subdued search and destroy musician via supple dialogue and animated call and response digressions. With these pieces, the instrumentalists delve into softly stated themes of an often-climactic nature. Soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill's spiraling, extended notes on the piece simply titled, 'II' emits a surreal or perhaps liquefying effect as few will debate his now historic significance within this genre. Yet Centazzo's daintily executed polyrhythms and multihued textures on 'V', provides Koglmann and Coxhill with a launching pad for yearning lines and the soloist's introspective dialogue. The works titled, 'Moot # 2' through 'Moot # 5' were originally recorded and issued in 1978 on the 'ICTUS' LP titled, Moot. These pieces feature Centazzo and Coxhill performing with trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini for a series of improvisations that are marked by linear passages and fervent three-way dialogue enhanced by Centazzo's crisp percussion statements and resplendent cymbal work. No doubt, Situations is a noteworthy entry into the annals of the oft fabled Euro-Jazz improvisational scene. ~ glenn astarita, allaboutjazz.com
Two groups perform here, the first (represented on seven tracks) is from a fascinating session with Italian percussionist Andrea Centazzo, Austrian trumpeter Franz Koglmann, and British soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill, and the second (on four cuts) has Italian trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini replacing Koglmann. The numbers with Schiaffini were released previously on the Ictus label as an LP entitled Moot. The primary interest is the rare combination of Coxhill with Schiaffini and Koglmann. All the pieces appear freely improvised, although credits are given to compositions by Centazzo. While there is a tendency to drift, particularly on the Koglmann cuts, Centazzo pulls it together with some very exciting, though subtle, demonstrations. Koglmann and Schiaffini are both deliberate performers, although the trombonist ups the ante with some of his well-known rapid-fire attacks that mesh well with Coxhill's approach. Due to the small number of players and the absence of piano and bass, there is plenty of room for individual expression that should please admirers of all of these under-recorded giants of the international free jazz scene. ~ steve loewy, allmusic.com
Document of the meeting between percussionist Andrea Centazzo and English sax player Coxhill, Situations is much more that a simple reissue; it contains 7 unissued tracks. In these bonus-tracks Centazzo and Coxhill are teamed by the Austrian trumpet player Franz Koglmann, an important on the improvised music scene, unfortunately his talent is not always recognized. Following very long tour in all Europe the trio goes in studio, in 1982, with a very strong unity and clear ideas. The result is a mix of different styles, from pure improvised sounds to imaginary soundtrack, from echoes of marching and brass bands to pop quotations, without forgetting moments evoking Mittleurope, not the real but an imaginary one. To create this music puzzle the trio, always very comfortable in all the contests, collaborate with all his elements, the atmosphere created by the three performers are very intense, fresh and original even today, twenty years later. In this contest, with a very large amount of freedom for each member of the group, Coxhill and Koglmann demonstrates ideal companions of the Italian percussionist. Coxhill, in particular is able to fully display all the wide range of his art: his strong irony that can mutate in cold, frozen calmness or viceversa in the space of a second, without being overwhelmed by useless virtuosity. In the second part of the CD Franz Koglmann is replaced by trombone player Giancarlo Schiaffini. The recordings of this second trio were done earlier, in 1978, and the sound of the group is quite different. The presence of Schiaffini, a very talented and expert artist, always in the middle between jazz and the more experimental territories of the avant-garde European contemporary music changes radically the sound, now more sharp and corrosive, pervaded by a constant tension. The trio now flies over a ever changing sea of sounds, a never ending tension for the listeners whose attention must be at the maximum level. The three musicians are very concentrated and inspired always attentive to pick up the other's intuitions. Situations all together is a precious re-discovery and a confirmation of the importance of the Italian musicians in the creative music scene between the 70's and 80's. ~ felmay.it
