Cecilia Persson. Improviser and composer. Words used about many a jazz musician, yet here is an improviser with a recogniz - able expression – which should not be taken for granted, especially not on a piano – and a composer who has received Swedish Radio’s award Jazz - katten as Composer of the year, and who is Composer in Residence for Norrbotten Big Band during 2014.
Cecilia Persson – improviser and composer – is best known for her work in the group Paavo, but plays the piano in several other bands, with Lina Nyberg for example. But in a way, now is when Cecilia makes her debut, since it is thefirst time she is alone in the roles of band leader and composer. And what an ambitious debut it is. Not fewer than ten musicians are deployed, combined in different formats on different tracks.
This is ensemble music where improvisation is used as a tool for composition. Cecilia makes sure to give the other musicians space – she trusts them – but creates a framework for them: repetitive lines, fleeting motifs nand mellow melodies. Perhaps this sounds as being in contrast with free improvisation, but with the help of good musicians these two elements can be intertwined, and thus giving each other an outline. Cecilia has a habit of using titles that allude to her other great passion in life, namely horse-riding (the first one is music, naturally). Open Rein is a term for using the reins in a loose fashion
that guides the horse in finding balance. Perhaps this is telling of Cecilia’s music: the piano bench is a saddle, and from there Cecilia directs the music with her two hands. But not too firmly.
