This Italian jazz orchestra bases this recording on a very ambitious and adventurous concept: variations, interpretations, and expansions of notes from an apparently well-known Gregorian melody. Whether or not the tune is recognized is ultimately not so important. What is remarkable is the way in which this highly individualized ensemble incorporates ancient classical sonorities and melds them effectively with modern and even post-modern sensibilities. The results are not so much a fusion as an altogether new creation, and incredibly, one that surprises as it impresses. Very few of the 20-plus members of the Dolmen Orchestra are known outside their home in the Apulia region of Italy, though the amount of talent represented here is astonishing. Recorded from three live concerts on consecutive days, the pieces feature guests John Surnam on baritone saxophone and Michel Godard, each taking extended solos. Also featured are the operatic, modern vocals of Linda Bsiri. Each of the five pieces is of extended length, ranging from eight to 23 minutes, but there are very few lapses and, to the contrary, numerous moments of beauty, suspense, and even vision.
