1968 Montreux Jazz Festival
For its second edition – its poster signed by Roger Bornand – the Festival invites Benny Bailey, Louis Stewart, Jim Doherty, Mike Westbrook, Three-Logy (with Philip Catherine), Jimmy Smith, the Géo Voumard Trio and Brian Auger accompanied by Julie Driscoll. Topping the bill, Bill Evans forms a trio with Jack DeJohnette and Eddie Gomez. With the Chillon Castle on its cover and one Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, the live recording of this event will help promote the fame of Montreux Jazz around the world. John Surman and Jan Garbarek are among the winners of the soloists contest organized by the Festival. On 16 June, an incredibly intense performance by Nina Simone at the Montreux Casino provides an exceptional closure to the edition.
