Billy Eckstine, fresh from a string of single hits that he recorded for MGM, needed to reestablish himself as a record seller on Mercury Records. Billy's Best! was his new label's way of showing faith in the great crooner, that he could fashion an album of songs that would work as a whole - as the LP format had become dominant in the industry by 1957. The prevailing mood of the songs is romance with touches of mystery and melancholy. And with the words of such master lyricists as Irving Berlin, Lorenz Hart, and Cole Porter, and tasteful big-band arrangements by Henry Mancini and Pete Rugolo, Eckstine's rich baritone consistently smacks of sophistication and craftsmanship. The CD includes six bonus tracks from other Fifties sessions featuring Sweets Edison, Hal Mooney's orchestra, and the singer's longtime accompanist, Bobby Tucker.
