Stars in Our Eyes, The Swingers
These two long-players are available on a single CD two-fer from Collectors' Choice Music. Both Stars in Our Eyes and The Swingers were originally issued in 1962 and represent the 15th and 16th studio releases by the vocal quartet during their eight-year -- and counting -- association with Capitol Records. Each title individually contains a dozen tracks that fit into the respective album's concept or motif. Stars in Our Eyes allows the Four Freshmen an opportunity to pay homage to their influences, as well as peers, while The Swingers is a reference to the swing-era jazz numbers included on the album. Although a seemingly obvious idea, the indescribably singular vocal resonance produced by the Four Freshmen -- when coupled with pop standards that have already been hit records in their own right -- is indeed a sure-fire winning combination. Several of the reworkings, especially "Tom Dooley" and "Standing on the Corner," contain highly unique arrangements courtesy of their longtime collaborator, Dick Reynolds. His instinctual knowledge of their vocal blend brings new facets to many of the pop, folk, and jazz standards. Seeing as vocal jazz is the Four Freshmen's niche, The Swingers is an aptly compiled aggregate highlighting many facets of swing-era jazz. These range from the sublimely upscale cover of Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll" to the comparatively silly reworking of Sir Duke's co-collaboration with Peggy Lee on "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'." Additionally, this version contains specifically penned lyrics by none other than Miss Lee herself. Other highlights include the workout given to the Art Pepper/Stan Kenton composition "Dynaflow" and the quartet's definitive reading of George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland." The pairing of these two recordings fits comfortably and both are vital installments in any enthusiast's appreciation of the Four Freshmen. Here's hoping that Collectors' Choice Music will reissue their entire seminal '50s and '60s catalog.

Stars in Our Eyes
On their 18th outing, the Four Freshmen -- Ross Barbour (vocals), Bob Flanigan (vocals/trombone), Ken Albers (vocals/trumpet/arranger), and Bill Comstock (vocals) -- remade a dozen sides that were originally significant entries for other combos. Although the incarnation of the group was the fourth since 1954, this was the longest-running lineup, performing together for a total of 13 years (1960-1973). Released in 1962, Stars in Our Eyes is an apropos heading for the project, as the quartet is joined by Dick Reynolds on these overhauls of a wide variety of material, such as the simple and stunning interpretation of the traditional folk melody "Tom Dooley," a concurrent hit for their Capitol Records labelmates the Kingston Trio. The intimacy of their refined and densely packed harmonies blends effortlessly with Reynolds' sturdy and lush orchestrations. "Standing On the Corner" is particularly prominent, as the Freshmen contrast their sound with the quick tempo and swinging score, not to mention an uncanny ability to switch styles immediately and seemingly midstream, one example of which is the regally displayed and complex fusing of vocals into a singular expression. "Teach Me Tonight" takes on a slightly Latin feel punctuated by space age bachelor pad exotica-influenced percussion, further exhibiting the perfect match of Reynolds' versatility and the Freshmen's unmistakable presence. In addition to being consummate singers, Albers and Flanigan contribute as instrumentalists. The opener, "Shangri-La," is marked by a sublime solo from Albers, while "Sentimental Me" and "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" display the distinguished trombone of Flanigan. For their next album, 1962's The Swingers, the conducting and arranging chores would be deferred to Bill Holman, whose association with the Four Freshman dated back nearly a decade.

The Swingers
With the title referring to the dozen jazzy numbers and vocal arrangements found inside, 1962's The Swingers was the 19th release in less than eight years from the influential Four Freshmen. Although the combo's membership had already seen three prior incarnations, the fourth -- featured here -- would be the longest aggregate to perform together (1960-1973). Co-founders Ross Barbour (vocals) and Bob Flanigan (vocals/trombone) are joined by 1956 recruit Ken Albers (vocals/trumpet/arranger), as well as Bill Comstock (vocals). What hasn't changed, however, is the tradition of ultra-tight harmonic precision and unmistakable flair on which the Four Freshmen were established. While they had adopted a variety of musical genres, reworking jazz classics was undeniably their forte. Here, they provide both lyrics and wordless adaptations of melodies that had become familiar standards, including a trio of Duke Ellington compositions. Demonstrating their interpretive versatility, "Satin Doll" is given a bright and buoyant monosyllabic (i.e., "do-do-do-do") rendering, contrasting the somewhat zany collaboration with Peggy Lee -- who wrote the lyrics -- on Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'." Bill Holman's orchestral direction is more pop-driven than the lush backdrops that Dick Reynolds was known for. It fits nicely on the Four Freshmen's second stab of George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland," initially showing up five years earlier on their fifth long-player, 1957's Four Freshmen and Five Saxes. Additional highlights include the intricate syncopation and timing of "Lulu's Back in Town" and the boppin' take of Count Basie's "Taps Miller." "L'il Darlin'" is the album's sole ballad; not surprisingly, it arguably seems out of place in the context of the other material, but that shouldn't be seen as a reflection of the song's presentation.
