Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook is a collection of songs by George and Ira Gerswhin and recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Recorded in 1959 when Ella was 41, the collection contains 59 compositions by Gershwin, which were arranged by Nelson Riddle. Although George Gershwin had died in 1937, Ira Gershwin was still alive to see the project completed and even helped to contribute lyrics to some songs on the album which had never been recorded before. About Ella Fitzgerald's performance, Ira said that he had "never known how good our songs were until I heard Ella sing them".
