It‘s a real pleasure for me to have in my hands a young and sincere venture born of a musician like Bernat Font, who expresses his art, from the foundations of Afro-American Musical Classicism, with such freshness and character.
Throughout the 11 tracks, nine of which are the offspring of lined paper and the restless pen of the author, presented to us one after the other in a natural and fitting pantone, these three impassioned jazzmen introduce their first record entitled “The Shout”.
With the deep roots of the blues, and the regular swing beat, always staying true to the feeling, their musical project takes us on a journey through the first half of the last century.
From ragtime to the classic swing trio, passing by Boogie Woogie, Fats Waller and Art Tatum, with a nod in the direction of Oscar Peterson and Count Basie, would be the most concise and accurate way of describing their musical influences and philosophy.
And so, having done their homework well, the music that filters out of this recording, made only days before Bernat’s 21st birthday, is fluid and diverse as you will hear in Blues 4 Rhene. The theme is soft and seductive and its development is embellished with original changes in tone and metre that demonstrate a notable stylistic plurality.
The trio’s technical skill and the more daring approach of its pianist take shape in tracks such as Steeplechase Rag, Pinoy Rag, Big 3 or Bren’s Boogie, in which Bernat seems secure in the execution of piano styles and techniques as complex as Boogie and stride piano, making it a liberated form.
Ulls Ametlla, Seafood, Don’t put sugar in my sin and The Lord is Back are perhaps the most idiosyncratic and personal tracks of the album. In the first three the intensity, musical feeling and artistic detail are made clear.
The contrast between smoothness and intensity is significant in Ulls Ametlla as is the relaxation motivated by the sliding double bass and the percussion in the magnificent Seafood.
The Lord is back, on the other hand, stirs up feelings of youth with the more lively melody moving through the traditions of Boogie and Rockabilly to total intensity.
Finally, After sun and Tea for two open the can wherein is hidden Classic Swing with the suggestion from Bernat, as much as Ivan and Marti, that the bee-bop period even today, enjoys a kind of permanent modernity.
Passion, race, technique and authenticity co-exist in this series of notes that you have just opened up in the form of a CD where, incidentally, I haven’t found any shouting, yelling or one note out of tune. You won’t suffer then because of the title, since there are more than a few opportunities to shout with joy as you join in unison with the jazz of Bernat and his friends.

When was the last time you attended a Jazz show that made you feel like gettin’ off your seat to get up and dance jitterbug like it’s 1944? Why is it that most jazz musicians rather read music sheets on stage than learn their parts and perform like rockstars? How often do those egocentric jokes between songs actually make you laugh? And why do jazz cats have the worst taste in fashion these days?!
Bernat Font is not the case. Aside from being the best piano player in Catalunya, Spain, he is as hip as it gets. His trio has the attitude and speed of a punk band, the precision of a classical orchestra and the sense of humor of Louie CK. Bernat wears ironic hats and colored bostonian shoes. His boogie style includes traditional swing, heavy blues, new orleans snare rolls, motown beats and original ballads inspired in Art Tatum (his favorite piano player).
The trio released their new album “Out for a While” at Jamboree Jazz Club (Barcelona, Spain) a few days ago; we had the chance to attend the CD release party and talk with them about Wine, Tapas and Jazz. BFT are all about taking their fans back to the roots of jazz even though the three of them are into avant garde and hard bop. Font’s rhythm section swings hard, unlike many other spanish jazz bands that sound a little bit too flamenco (which is awesome, but different), drummer Marti' Elias and bass player Ivan Kovac(evic' understand the language and play for the music.
Bernat has been reviewed by many critics around the globe and his name will be everywhere soon, actually, it already is.

A new record from Bernat Font is cause for total celebration. And more so when it is live, which is where his music radiates all the passion boiling inside, which is considerable. Blues, swing, jazz, ragtime, boogie, stride… all the styles meld in the fingers of this keyboard prodigy who gives off a fire that sets the spirit burning as soon as it hits your ears.
The ability to shake loose is uncontainable, as this recording makes clear with the reinvention of three numbers from his first studio album (Ulls Ametlla, Seafood and The Lord Is Back), a composition from the second (Himalayan Sun), and eight new pieces that give him the chance to show off his skills as both a composer and an instrumentalist.
Although the sources nurturing his musical outpouring lie in both the primitive cult (Scott Joplin) and the popular (Fats Waller), Font knows how to carry this primal current into the 21st century by drawing on other contemporary sources, from Thelonious Monk to Keith Jarrett.
Nor are the classics–from Bach to Liszt–overlooked in his enlightened pianistic efforts. It is the combination of lyricism, acceleration, and precision that confers uniqueness on his artistic personality. This is the admirable virtue of what he offers, which quickly becomes a challenge by shaking up the poor understanding of the contemporary held by the overlyliterate while also leaving the purists squirming.
His technique is beyond reproach, but he never deigns to show off his virtuosity, which leaves a pleasant taste. His skill is in service to the stories, images, and experiences that inspire his compositions and make of him an imaginative and powerful teller of stories in sound, like few others.
He benefits from the support of an impeccable rhythm section made up of bassist Ivan Kovacevic and Marti Elias on drums. They comprise an extraordinary, veritable cornerstone that keeps the flame lit under the eighty-eight keys of this magic pianist.

This album of mostly original songs by Bernat Font brings an exciting new sound to the jazz world. I was extremely impressed when I saw Bernat live with his trio recently in Barcelona. They have managed to capture that feeling and good vibe on this recording.
Bernat plays with great swing and technique but is also a unique and original voice on the piano. His compositions delight with their often mysterious twists and turns and never leave the listener feeling bored or unchallenged! He also is a master at using space, allowing the music to breath. Bernat Font is a welcome voice on today’s jazz scene and this recording manages to avoid licks and cliches. This is a delight in today’s music world.
