Blue N Groovy, Vol. 1 is an excellent 11-track sampler of the funkiest soul-jazz and hard-bop in the Blue Note catalog, containing calssic moments from Duke Pearson ("Chili Peppers"), Jack Wilson ("On Children"), Stanley Turrentine ("Meat Wave"), Don Wilkerson ("Dem Tambourines"), Art Blakey ("Ping Pong"), Tina Brooks ("True Blue"), Bobby Hutcherson ("8/4 Beat"), Wayne Shorter ("Tom Thumb"). While a couple of these moments are familiar -- Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" and Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder," for instance -- there's a number of rarities previously unavailable on CD, as well, making this of equal interest to collectors and casual fans.
