Tom Wilson Notes reproduced from the original album liner
Because of the unique urge toward absolute individualism which figures so importantly in the development of great jazzmen, efforts to blend the talents of two jazz greats often ends in failure. Although the idea of recording Monk with Meade Lux Lewis may have a certain superficial appeal in terms of electronically cross-breeding the radically differing jazz styles of two great contributors to the development of the idiom, no sane recording director would expect the result of such a union to be a cohesive, integrated collection of piano material ala Ferrante & Teicher. The jazz philosophies and techniques involved in a hypothetical Monk-Lewis record date would probably be so antagonistic or so apathetic that only cacophony or drabness would be produced. Obviously, when combining the talents on record of two great jazz artists, it is important that their conceptions of jazz lie as compatible as possible. As an evidence of the complete rapport which McDuff and "Jug" have established, listen to their moving, elegantly swaggering efforts on "Mellow Gravy". Following a reception of the soulful theme, Ammons slides in with his characteristic nonchalance.
Intoning the first few bars with a quiet but potent simplicity, Ammons develops a statement of the "truth" which initially asks, then urges, and finally exhorts the listener to "get down with it" and swing. Exploiting the neaty middle register of the organ, McDuff answers Gene with a "gospelized" solo which gains great momentum from dynamically repeated developments of a single strong improvisational idea.
In addition to the two great stars, tenorman Harold Vick provides a great ensemble sound with Ammons, and a fine, soaring solo in the Coltran'e harmonic mode on "Strollin'". Joe Dukes stands out consistently with a crisp, compelling backbeat which doesn't nag, and a light, musical ride cymbal sound. The deep voiced plectral excursions of guitarist Eddie Diehl give the ear fine relief from the reed sound of both the organ and the two saxes. Also, Mr. Diehl plays a rhythm guitar which meshes perfectly with McDuff comping and pseudo-bass beat.
In general stylistic terms, Jack McDuff is an exponent of that school of "self-contained" organists who are capable of sustaining a funky, driving bass line with the foot pedals of the Hammond while improvising on the keyboard with great virtuosity and velocity. Perhaps the highflying Jimmy Smith is the best known proponent of integrating the disparate skills of bassist and pianist at the organ. Certainly many of the newer jazz organists, show strong influences of Smith's approach to improvisation in their playing. However, the veteran McDuff is a "self-made" man so far as style is concerned. Eschewing the trumpet toned upper reaches of the organ and the "double-time" phrases so much favored by Smith, McDuff loves to "preach" in the middle and lower registers of his great horn at relatively deliberate tempos, simmering rather than beil-ing with "soulful" jazz projection. Brother 'Duff is really in his groove when suspensefully developing intense, reiterative one-note phrases or laying down two-hand block chords against a "walking" beat or when steadfastly trilling "sanctified" tremulos to drive home a point of his jazz sermon.
Jack "comps" chord patterns behind his fellow soloists with a propulsive ease that provides a gentle lift for them rather than a harsh rhythmic push. He seems to be striving to achieve a perfect blend with guitarist Eddie
Diehl and drummer Joe Dukes by subordinating the awesome power and articulateness of the electric organ. McDuff effects an unobstructive, but firm control by allowing heir rhythmic and tonal nuances to permeate every filament of his tastefully restrained improvisatory line, rather than simply overpowering the rhythm section with his sheer power and technical brilliance. In this sense, his solos are but the final, smooth-grained veneer on a musical edifice that he and the group have constructed together as true "soul brothers".
Herein, when Brother Jack meets the Boss, you can rest assured that Jack McDuff and Gene Ammons are of one mind in desiring to create jazz with a fat, infectiously swing beat; unpretentious native; and possessing a hip, happy- straight-forward, musical message. Both performers have uncompromisingly strong instrumental techniques Both are steeped in the vital earthy rhythm and blues tradition. Both display great relaxation bulwarked by a sense of latent power. This recording then represents one of the rare "studio" marriages of great jazz talent that has been completely successful.
