When Marion Meadows hit the ground running in 1991 with the CD 'For Lovers Only', few people realized that his infectious saxophone style would become one of the most distinctive voices in jazz. With a career that began playing the clarinet and studying classical music at age eight, his journey to jazz has been quite eventful. Prior to his 1991 debut recording, Marion had honed his skills with Phyllis Hyman, Eartha Kitt, Brook Benton, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Jean Carne, Angela Bofill and Norman Connors' Starship Orchestra. He even produced an album for Connors entitled 'Passion' during those years. With a stellar sense of direction, Marion has become one of the most notable artists in the smooth jazz arena. His latest release continues a formula that has proven to be a highly successful one in the era of non-descript jazz.
'In Deep' on the Heads Up Record Label is Marion Meadows' seventh album. This time out, he picks up on the production side of his release with assistance from Michael Bearden. Marion also adds an equal amount of smooth jazz, Latin, R&B, Neo-soul and hip-hop influences to meld his CD together even more. Additional assistance comes from a stellar cast of characters with a history of outstanding contributions to jazz, pop and R&B music. Collectively, the combined array of talent and Marion's close-end production support made way for a very special happening.
Over the course of his career, Marion has not wanted to be pigeon-holed as merely another soprano saxophonist. He endeavors to maintain a spiritual center that draws upon his intuitive creativity, as he continues to raise expectations of himself. He seems to thrive on broadening his horizons in a uniquely distinctive style of play. Meadows also applies a fresh perspective on each new project he approaches. While listening to his previous recordings, I found no two CD's sounded alike. On 'In Deep', the standards that set the tone for a most dynamic and outstanding influence on modern day jazz remains intact.
