Originally Blue note BST-84066 (1961) More good mastering from the Gray Hoffman team.
This quartet album with Lou Donaldson (alto) as leader is special for several reasons. It features Grant Green (gtr) and Baby Face Willette (org) who were both making their Blue Note recording debuts. These musicians actually cut 3 albums in a week, 1 under the leadership of Donaldson, another under the leadership of Green (Grant’s 1st Stand) & the 3rd under the leadership of Baby Face (Face To Face). Of course Donaldson had already made many recordings both as leader & sideman, Green was to have an extensive (albeit often underappreciated) career, but Willette was to record just once more before returning to obscurity.
All about Jazz:
Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson is 1 of a slew of hornmen to emerge from the long shadow of Charlie Parker, 1 whose distinctive bluesy sensibility eventually became a leading voice in the soul jazz movement. Here ‘Tis, Donaldson’s 14th session as a leader for Blue Note, is a standout release in his catalogue, a high midpoint along a stylistic transition that began with 1958’s Blues Walk & would crystallize with 1967’s Alligator Bogaloo.
Here ‘Tis boasts a stellar supporting cast in a vibrant workout over 4x 12-bar blues tunes & a cover of the Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day.” Donaldson’s playing here contains the best of bop & blues aesthetics; unhurried, fluent, expressive & eminently swinging, his ideas unfold with a seemingly effortless mix of heart & intelligence. As Robert Levin aptly describes it in the original liner notes, “If there is sometimes…a scent of the academy…there is also the vitality & conviction of insight.”
Green, a fresh arrival on the New York scene at this point in his career, his talent in full flower, delivers solos that evince a masterful mix of space & density, stop & go. Willette is the emotional epicenter of the session, working the organ with a raw, undisciplined touch that pulls on the listener like a preacher’s sermon, milking each phrase to its last emotive drop. While “A Foggy Day,” Bird’s “Cool Blues” & “Watusi Jump” are brisk swingers, showcasing the combo’s driving verve, the title track & “Walk Wid Me” are moody dirges that would past muster with a down-home blues bar crowd.
AllMusic:
Here ‘Tis is in the front rank of Lou Donaldson records, an exceptionally funky soul-jazz session that finds the saxophonist swinging harder than usual. As he moves from hard bop to soul-jazz, Donaldson reveals a bluesy streak to his playing while keeping the vigorous attack that defined his best bop. Donaldson’s playing is among his finest in the soul-jazz vein, but what makes Here ‘Tis such an enjoyable session is his interaction with his supporting trio of guitarist Grant Green, organist Baby Face Willette, & drummer Dave Bailey. As support, all 3 know how to keep a groove gritty & flexible, following Lou’s lead & working a swinging beat that keeps flowing, never growing static. Green & Willette also have their time in the spotlight, & both musicians are frequently stunning. Green’s single-note leads are clean & inventive; Willette is rhythmic & forceful, but also capable of soulful, mellow leads on the slow blues. Their talent, combined with Donaldson at a peak, results in a terrific record.
