Freddie Hubbard was, next to Miles Davis, the most dramatic & far-reaching brass player of the past 60 years. He died at age 70 in December 2008, leaving a legacy of some 100 recordings under his own name & with everyone from Wes Montgomery & Art Blakey to Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, Dexter Gordon, George Benson, Sarah Vaughan, Max Roach, Count Basie, Ornette Coleman & many others. Throughout the course of his luminous international career, Hubbard established a standard of pure sound that brass players aspire to today. Hubbard’s explosive & lyrical virtuosity (1st noted during a high school band performance in his hometown of Indianapolis) as well as his flow of brilliant, spontaneous ideas & determination to play loudest, hardest, fastest and most imaginatively, will never go out of style.
Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard teams up on record with James Spaulding (who doubles on alto & flute) for the 1st time on this excellent set, with the assistance of pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Reggie Workman, & drummer Clifford Jarvis. The quintet performs 4 of the trumpeter’s originals (including “Lament for Booker” & the title cut) plus an advanced version of the standard “You’re My Everything.” John Coltrane’s modal music was starting to influence Hubbard’s conception & his own playing was pushing the modern mainstream ahead without really entering the avant-garde.
