Об альбоме (сборнике)
Recorded January 30, February 3-5, & March 11, 1969. Originally released by Verve. This limited SHM-SACD was sourced from 2008 DSD masters produced by Verve (US).

What’s New features the Bill Evans Trio with Eddie Gomez & Marty Morell at its peak with the then-up-&-coming flutist, Jeremy Steig. Inspired by 1 another, the 4 musicians seem to be on fire, turning in hot, sparkling improvisations.
SA-CD.net review by analogue January 3, 2012:
It has been said that Bill Evans was getting a little complacent during the time period this recording was done. That Evans & his trio were getting a little too similar & redundant in their musical directions & approaches.
Enter the excellent flutist Jeremy Steig & you get 1 amazing album with a unique direction. Creatively the addition of Mr. Steig is a revelation. I would have thought that he might be the star of the entire album as the flute tends to overtake other instruments for lead position but actually all members are equal here, & they all sound great during solo’s.
Soundwise I was a little nervous about this shm sacd as the original dsd transfer was done in 2008 from Verve; long before the actual Shm Sacd program kicked into gear. I much prefer the Japanese Techs doing new dsd transfers as they sound by & large amazing to my ears. I needn’t have worried as this is 1 terrifc dsd transfer with the music sounding awesome from start to finish.
The flute of Steig is rendered with a very lifelike & 3d sound. But to my surprise the entire band is equally rendered just as well. Bass is liquid, flowing & deep; drums very solid & limber & Evans piano is also captured beautifully & solidly. This is a great recording of a wonderful performance. Even the tape hiss is great. There is a great soundstage & crank the volume & you will really be in for a treat.
My only complaint is that Mr. Steig tends to get carried away & there are numerous times where he breathes into the flute so powerfully that squeals & odd sounds can be heard. This tends to detract from the organic flow of the performance & distract the listener out of his involvement with the musical journey. At times it is quite jarring an effect.
I recommend this new Shm Sacd whole-heartedly. It is a very unique album (the only kind in the Evans discography). The entire album is a great listen with superb sonics.
Shm SACDs are expensive but these discs, done this good, are worth the cash.
