Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the best known Japanese pop music composers and performers outside Japan. After being a member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra (which can roughly be described as Technopop in the verve of Kraftwerk) he has written and recorded various Soundtracks ('Little Buddha', 'Merry Christmas Mr. Laurence', ..) as well as numerous solo albums.
The group Danceries has been founded in 1972 by Ichiro Okamoto in order to perform early European music (but as well folk songs from Okinawa) with instruments as viol, lute, saz, rebec, tambourine together with soprano and mezzo soprano vocals.
'The End of Asia' is the result of the collaboration of Ryuichi Sakamoto and the group Danceries, which has taken place during fall 1981. The 6 medieval and Renaissance tracks have been arranged by Ichiro Okamoto, the 5 other tracks have been written by Ryuichi Sakamoto and are partly arranged by Y. Kawaguchi and partly by Sakamoto himself.
The first three songs are rather dynamic and joyful, the songs 4 to 6 have a slower tempo and are more focussed on the melody. The songs 7 to 11 are more meditative and melancholic, as to be expected for songs of love and chivalry, with track 8 and 9 as counterpoint. There is as well a shift from less to more ancient (of course this applies only for the tracks not written by R. Sakamoto).
I have to admit that it took me some time to appreciate this album, since at that time I was rather into New Wave and Rock, or the more playful, exotic and sometimes jazzy other albums of Ryuichi Sakamoto. 'The End of Asia' is nevertheless a stunning experience, since it moves away from all the decorum and imagery right to the essence of melody, rhythm and vocals.
All the songs are quite short (sometimes less than two minutes), but their intensity makes it unnecessary to stretch them. A special mention goes as well the surprising sound quality of an early digital recording.

Composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, rearranged for this album. R. Sakamoto again on a portative organ. The original version of this track (written for synthesizers, percussion and two pianos) can be found on 'Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto'.
Track 7 'Pour ce se d'amer' (France 13th C). A troubadour song from Thibaut de Navarre. With almost 6 minutes the longest track. This amazing song is performed with splendid vocals. It starts with sparsely instrumentation and gets more complex in the end.
