Об исполнителе (Wiki)
Kenny Barron (born June 9, 1943 in Philadelphia), is an American jazz pianist. He is the younger brother of
tenor saxophonist Bill Barron, and known for his lyrical, adaptive style.
His talent first came to wider recognition when he took the piano chair in the 1960s Dizzy Gillespie quartet.
He graduated in 1978 with a BA in Arts from Empire State College (Metropolitan Center, NYC).
He also co-led the groups Sphere and the Classical Jazz Quartet.
Between 1987 and 1991, Barron recorded several albums with Stan Getz, most notably
Bossas & Ballads – The Lost Sessions, Serenity, Anniversary and People Time, a 2-CD set.
He has been nominated nine times for Grammy Awards and for the American Jazz Hall of Fame.
For over 25 years, Barron taught piano and keyboard harmony at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
He now teaches at the Manhattan School of Music.

Об альбоме
Sambao is Kenny Barron's tribute to Brazilian music done his way. These original compositions by the peerless pianist combine jazz and samba in a modernistic way, with no copying of tunes from the master Antonio Carlos Jobim, and no hint of the populist Stan Getz approach due to the lack of a lead instrument, save Barron's attractive and inventive piano.
He's accompanied by heavyweights of the Rio-cum-New York City scene, including guitarist Toninho Horta, bassist Nico Assumpção, and French-born percussionist Mino Cinelu. Barron's (and most people's) favorite jazz drummer Victor Lewis is included, reinforcing the rhythms expertly as usual. Though not a working or touring group on any level, the ensemble sounds extremely tight and exactly in tune with what Barron's wants to portray. The tune "Bacchanal" is one Barron's fans might remember in his early days when recording for the Muse label, also included on the Sonny Fortune LP Serengeti Minstrel, and it is happily revised in full, bright regalia.
Cinelu's composition "Yalele" is also joyous, as shouted vocals and a group chorus of the title soar over a deeper piano sound from Barron. The lengthy "Encounter" and "Gardenia" stretch out, allowing all the players to fully interact and especially improvise, the former in a mysterious mood mixing up meters but settling in 4/4, the latter nicely sweet, patient, and more collaborative as Barron's genius musings turn into occasional flourishes à la Oscar Peterson. Modal jazz meets the rain forest during "On the Other Side" as a pure singsong melody is adopted, quite similar to the Barry Harris tribute "Nascimento." "Ritual" is a fast, faded-in-samba jam that might have been an accidental afterthought turned into a welcome inclusion, while the most airy and breezy tune is "Belem," in the straightest Brazilian style. Horta is always excellent, but is more restrained save "Gardenia," and Lewis keeps thing rolling along without allowing them to burst out.
Anyone who has appreciated the genius of Kenny Barron over the many fruitful years of his career can easily enjoy this sidebar project, with the hope that someday, he'll do it again. (All Music Guide)

CD Universe:
This impressive set reveals one of the many sides of pianist Kenny Barron, that of the Latin romantic. His nimble style is featured on eight original compositions focusing on the Brazilian samba in various forms.
The man who adds the most flavor to these pieces is percussionist Mino Cinelu, who provides the myriad of sounds that give the music such an authentic feel; Barron and Cinelu perform almost as a duet within the ensemble. For his part, Tonino Horta's tasteful acoustic guitar adds just the right texture to provide that Brazilian spirit. Standout cuts include the opening title track, the lively "Bacchanal," and the delicately dancing "Belem."
Audio Mixers: José Ortega; Jay Newland; Joe Lopes.
Recording information: New York, NY (05/1992-07/1992).
Personnel: Kenny Barron (piano); Toninho Horta (guitar); Nico Assumcao (bass); Victor Lewis (drums); Mino Cinelu (percussion).
Composers: Kenny Barron; Mino Cinelu.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Simply the Best!!, December 20, 2007
By: Robert McCall "The Equalizer" (New York City)
I believe that this is Kenny Barron's best album. The back and forth between Barron and Tonihino Horta on the acoustic guitar plus the rest of the rythm section [Assumpcao bass, V.Lewis drums, M.Cinelu perc.]in a Brazillian style is so simple and melodic and quite relaxing.
4.0 out of 5 stars - Brazillian Delite......, September 12, 2008
By: Dante Quinn "headface" (usa)
My first experience listening to an artist as versatile as Kenny Barron, the overall sense of the album is very " Bosa Nova." My favorite cut is "Baccanal" that combines all the talents of his classic Piano style and his backround players. The Album which combines American contemporary Jazz riffs with a Brazzilian sound, is outstanding. My only complaint is the recording sounds like its in Monoural and not Stereo sound. Well worth the listening pleasure.
