"Madanudo" was one of Ahmad Jamal's first recordings not in his familiar trio format - he's the only soloist in a program of original compositions and arrangements from the talented Richard Evans, well played by an anonymous big band (with occasional strings). As the (surprisingly candid) liner notes mention, this could really be considered a Richard Evans album, with Jamal relegated to a relatively minor role, one that could be filled by any number of pianists. (In this regard, this is similar to that "Theme From The V.I.P.'s," where Bill Evans apparently just showed up and played the piano parts - it could have just as easily been Rodger Williams; however, "Macanudo" is a far superior album to that dreary effort.) Because Jamal is not in his standard setting, he can't rely on his usual routines and bag of tricks, so in the couple of places he does take an extended solo, we're hearing something new. The attractive songs in the brief program (less than 25 minutes) are all related to locations in Latin America, and the arrangements reflect a mixture of styles and influences - I hear snatches of Oliver Nelson, Stan Kenton, Perez Prado, Leroy Anderson and Mantovani. The album always had its fans, even though it didn't make all that much of an impact when it was released. (I do remember hearing "Haitian Market Place" played frequently on a jazz radio station.). Like the other reviewer, I've been waiting for this to be reissued on CD. A nice job by Richard Evans and Jamal.
The CD is rounded out by a 1959 set from the familiar Jamal trio at Newport. And familiar it is - 5 songs he recorded the previous year at the Pershing, pretty much exactly the same versions! (Maybe a slight variation in tempo here or there, maybe a little looser, but you've heard it before.) Give the customers what they want! Enjoyable, of course, and the crowd enjoys it.
There's one additional live cut, from Jamal's 1963 trio - "Haitian Market Place" again - and at this point Jamal's style had evolved - much denser, not as much skimming over the surface.
So, even with some reservations, this is a strong reissue of material that really hasn't been in circulation for years, if at all, and if you're a fan of Jamal, I'd certainly think about adding this to your collection.
