Monster players like to surround themselves with monster players. But who could possibly keep up with the fleet-fingered Bruce Barth? On his 13th album as a leader‚ the pianist dazzles with superhuman speed on tracks like “Vámonos‚” but vibraphonist Steve Nelson and the rest of the quintet are capable of bringing equivalent heat. The swift fireworks are certainly impressive‚ but the time-signature shifts within “Vámonos” and throughout this 62-minute program illustrate that Barth is a master of any tempo. The album contains seven original compositions‚ as well as three interpretations‚ including a compelling‚ 7/4 version of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Triste” that features an elegant bass solo by Vincente Archer. The slow‚ poignant original tune “Moon Shadows” has a dreamy feel that’s augmented by the stellar trumpet work of Terell Stafford‚ who uses a cup mute here. Versatile drummer Montez Coleman crafts a Brazilian feel for the aptly titled “Brasilia‚” and then swings hard on “Then Three.” The program concludes with a duo performance in which Stafford and Barth venture onto hallowed ground by interpreting Keith Jarrett’s “So Tender‚” but the pair emerges victorious‚ thanks to a graceful‚ memorable conversation. Daybreak is a terrific calling card for a pianist and composer who is at the top of his game. (Bobby Reed, DownBeat Magazine)
