The cultured piano style of Kenny Barron has graced many albums in the last half century. He is an easy swinger deeply admired for his nonpareil musicianship and innate sensitivity to the needs of his musical companions of the moment. Born in 1943 he was gigging with Philly Joe Jones at sixteen and soon playing in a band with his tenor saxist brother Bill. In 1962 he was hired by Dizzy Gillespie and the five year stint he had with Dizzy established him firmly on the jazz scene throughout the world.
Kenny's winsome way with the style is on show here when he took a trip over to Rudy van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs N.J. along with his working Trio of the time featuring Ray Drummond on bass and Ben Riley on drums to record the opening Fungii Mama, the Blue Mitchell classic.
This is a joyous Trio romp honed to absolute perfection by the participants. Barron, Drummond and Riley fuse, as do all the best Trios, to the point where describing them merely as”a rhythm section” is almost an insult. Rather they provide interlocking commentaries and conversations within each given musical scenario - they are as one and it is pure empathy as each man anticipates the thought of his colleagues. We are indeed fortunate that this team is featured on no less than five of these selections.....
Next up in this varied look at the Barron cannon is Kenny's composition Slow Grind this time a solo masterpiece as he goes way back to the roots echoing the grand masters of the twelve bar genre from way back when.
