Wind-bells Installation: One thousand Nanbu iron wind-bells, swinging in the wind, create a new sound atmosphere in natural surroundings.
Sound fields used for this package are Yakushima Island, Kagoshima (April, 1991) and Mt. Gassan, Yamagata (September, 1991). In Yakushima Island, we looked for wind paths at heights from 1200 down to 900 m of Mt. Nonkidake. To hang wind-bells, we tied straw ropes to several hundred trees in the woods of 300 m square with height difference of up to 10 m. As this area is a wilderness reserve, we cannot set up ladders against the trees. Climbing such many trees was the hardest work for us.
Each wind-bell has a strip of paper with any of five different colors that I imagine from its tone. We hung the wind-bells at 80 cm intervals, while paying attention to the sound field and each wind-bell tone and wind direction. Our assistants moved about in the woods with the wind-bells in their hands to look for nice winds. They were enjoying the work and laughing like children though their legs were covered with mud.
At last, those thousand wind-bells harmonized together and then even scared birds started singing songs. Sounds of distant streams and songs of insects created a new sound atmosphere. While listening to ever-changing melodies of the wind, I found myself blending in with the sound field.
The wind is singing around and inside me.
