Editorial Reviews:
Jeremy Pelt's The Talented Mr. Pelt is just the kind of album one thinks of when it comes to how jazz is supposed to be: cool, confident, swinging and just a little mysterious. Pelt's group is that rarest of all things in jazz, a working band, and the familiarity and communication that come from extensive time spent playing together is evident. All the players are among the foremost 30-something neo-bop players in jazz today giving the group an all-star-type reputation with a well-rehearsed sound that comes only with familiarity and countless gigs.
Customer Review:
5.0 out of 5 stars Killer band delivers again with another post bop gem, April 9, 2011
By: Scott Williams "sneakyneighborsdog" (Oakland, CA United States)
Overview:
"The Talented Mr. Pelt" features the same lineup as Pelt's two prior albums, "November", and "Men of Honor". This talented group is one of the best bands out there today. It features, Pelt on trumpet, J.D. Allen on tenor sax, Danny Grissett on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums. Pelt is one of the top trumpeters playing in 2011. He has a beautiful warm tone, and amazing chops. Grissett is one of my favorite pianists. He plays a little bit of a lesser on this album versus the prior two, but nonetheless is great throughout. The style on of music on the album is straight ahead post bop jazz. It reminds me a great deal of the final acoustic albums of Miles Davis's 2nd classic quintet. In particular I can't help but think of Davis's "Nefertitti" and "Sorcerer" when listening to this music. While the music is similar to Pelt's two prior releases, this album is more subtle and textured. The songs are not quite as catchy as his two prior releases. It takes longer to get into the songs than on prior albums. After a few listens I don't enjoy it quite as much as the two prior releases, but its subtle surprises might ultimately make it my favorite in the long run. If you liked the last two releases you should absolutely add this to your collection.
Song Highlights:
All My Thoughts Are of You: This is real pretty song. Cleaver's soft brushes combined with Grissett's warm touch and Pelts glowing tone on the horn are the perfect combo for a ballad. J.D. Allen has an especially pretty solo on this tune. The song reminds me of Miles Davis's "Mood".
Paradise Lost: The title of this tune is perfect. There is sort of a nostalgic lost dream feel to it. There is a great drum solo by Cleaver in the middle of this song. After the drum solo finishes Cleaver continues to pulse and push as a Grissett solo ensues.
David and Goliath - I really love the pulsing rhythm set forth by bassist Burno and light propulsion of drums from Cleaver on this song. It really sets up a frenetic but clean backdrop for some great soloing. Pelt and Allen start things of with two fiery solos, but it is Grissett's solo that really wows me on this tune. His single handled runs and just fantastic, and conjure up images of a mid to late 60's Herbie Hancock.

CD Universe
Jeremy Pelt's 2011 effort, The Talented Mr. Pelt, features the same working ensemble the trumpeter has used since 2007, which includes tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Gerald Cleaver. In many ways, the album is a similarly inclined mix of adventurous, on-the-edge, post-bop and modal jazz that featured on Pelt's stellar 2010 album, Men of Honor. A forward-thinking improviser with an ear for late-'60s Miles Davis and '70s Woody Shaw, Pelt pushes the brass envelope as much as possible and can engage a listener quite well on record. In that sense, you never get a canned or predictable moment on The Talented Mr. Pelt. Tracks like the funky, off-kilter waltz "Paradise Lost" and the forceful, rough-around-the-edges "Pulse" are terrific modern jazz numbers that bring to mind both the dreamy compositions of saxophonist Wayne Shorter and the early, firebrand work of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Similarly, the gorgeous later-album ballad "Only" and the driving, eyes-toward-the-horizon closer "David and Goliath," while coming at group interplay from different emotional directions, find Pelt and his ensemble working as a cohesive unit of like-minded individuals who truly seem to dig playing with each other. Of all of Pelt's prodigious talents showcased on The Talented Mr. Pelt, clearly the ability to pick musically sympathetic and daring sidemen makes the album a joy to hear. ~ Matt Collar ( allmusic.com )

Down Beat (p.54) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] sly and nuanced record....It appears on the surface to be a fairly straightforward post-hard-bop record, but there's a ton of complexity in the composition's forms, their changes and the group's approach to time."
JazzTimes (p.69) - "Pelt deliberately doesn't dominate the spotlight, and the band achieves a blend of spontaneity and precision that makes these songs a pleasure to hear."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's a top-notch straightahead session..."

Jeremy Pelt - The Talented Mr. Pelt (High Note, 2011)
SOURCE:
MUSIC AND MORE BY TIM NILAND,
Published: 2011-02-04
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has established himself as one of the go-to musicians on trumpet and flugelhorn in the modern mainstream jazz scene. His yearly albums from the High Note label are postcards of classy hard bop played with great facility and style. On this album he is accompanied by J.D. Allen on tenor saxophone, Danny Grissett on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. They take off at a medium tempo on the opening "Pandora's Box" echoing the classic Blue Note Records sound of the 1960's (not surprising since this album was recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder) taking round-robin solos that are immaculately played. Gerald Cleaver makes his presence felt on a couple of the albums finest tracks. First "Paradise Lost" has his strong drumming urging along a mid-tempo groove, and interacting with the trumpet and saxophone in a very dynamic way. On the album's fast paced finale, "David and Goliath," he again proves his mettle establishing an excellent pocket with Bruno for a strong and lightning fast hard bop improvisation. The band tackles ballad material in a subtle and mannered fashion, as on "In Love Again" where spare piano and subtle muted brass conjure a lonely, romantic vibe. Breathy trumpet that is slow and patient glides through the ballad "All My Thoughts Are of You." This is a solid and well played slice of modern hard bop, which mainstream jazz fans will find quite accessible and entertaining. The band plays with panache and a thoughtful energy that makes for a successful recording.
