Clive Bell, Richard Scott and David Ross’s last record as Twinkle³ was called ‘Let’s Make a Solar System’. That gives some indication of what these guys do - they are architects of other worlds. What they’ve created here on ‘Debris In Lower Earth Orbit’ along with Norwegian singer Sidsel Endressen is remarkable to say the least. Together they’ve conjured an alternate, tangible reality that at once feels arcane and yet could be in the future - timeless in the sense it exists in its own time and space. Their unique mode of expression and idiosyncratic musical language has them channeling some intangible force - at moments conjuring images of ceremonies held by an ancient lost civilization while simultaneously reaching deep within the most primal aspects of the human soul. Endressen’s often sorrowful vocals sound like a shaman making contact with the spirit world, while the wind instruments weep mournful avant blues phrases over an alien soundworld created with microscopically detailed and intricate electronics.
A beautiful, otherworldly and strikingly original piece of work that’s going to need new adjectives inventing to begin to attempt to translate what the sounds evoke. But really who need words - that’s what your ears are for. Highly recommended.
