« Let’s Call Ed » started out as the Erwin Vann Trio in 1990. Over the years the music evolved consistently towards what it is today. At this time the music is totally liberated from any predetermined form, rhythm, harmony or melody. The compositions are totally improvised and composed on the spot, in the moment. The four master musicians of the band function as independant entities, interacting strongly in free flowing counterpoint. There is an extensive use of electronics, which contributes to the distinctive contemporary and original sound of « Let’s Call Ed ».
Erwin Vann, on saxophone, is the initiator and leader of the band. He started playing professionally some 20 years ago and has been a soloist/sideman in many different projects sharing the stage with greats such as Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, Wayne Shorter, Aldo Romano, Norma Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Hart, Paolo Fresu, Marc Ducret, Nguyen Le, Michel Benita, Rita Marcotulli, Bobby Previte, Hein Van de Geyn and many others. Over time he developped a personal approach to sound and improvisation.
In recent years he has become more and more active as a composer/arranger for bands as diverse as the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Venus, Moiano, Krewcial and Lalalover. Furthermore he composes music for contemporary dance (David Pressault Danse/Montreal), film (« Traces :Women’s Imprints » by Katy Lena Ndiaye/Neon Rouge) and television (TV5).
Jozef Dumoulin has his finger in lots of pies. Initially he played the piano, as in his collaboration with singer Barbara Wiernik on the CD ‘Eclipse’. In recent years, however, he has developed his unique sound on the Fender Rhodes combining it with electronics. Using this setup, he joined forces in a number of existing formations (Erwin Vann Quartet, Magic Malik Orchestra, Octurn, Mâäk's Spirit, Tomas & Co, Rêve d'Éléphant Orchestra), still finding enough time to engage in other enriching get-togethers (Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Toots Thielemans, Aka Moon, Venus). His newest band is called 'lidlboj' with Bo Van der Werf on baritone sax and Eric Thielemans on drums; together they bring a quite literal definition of contemporary fusion. Jozef is also part of Othin Spake, a trio with drummer Teun Verbruggen and rock guitarist Mauro Pawlowski from dEUS.
Michel Hatzigeorgiou is one of the greatest European electric bass players . His main influence is known to be Jaco Pastorius, with whom he toured in 1985. For many years he has been part of the Toots Thielemans Quartet. He is also a key member of Aka Moon (with Fabrizio Cassol and Stephane Galland) with whom he recorded numerous albums and developped many different projects. At the moment he is on world tour with Alain Platel’s vsprs (Les Ballets C.de la B.).
Dre Pallemaerts is one of the most in demand drummers in Europe. Over the years he has accompanied many jazz greats all over the world and developped an impressive discography. In recent years he has been increasingly active on the French jazz scene, recording, touring and teaching at the conservatory in Paris. Just recently he recorded his first album as a leader featuring Mark Turner, Bill Carrothers and Jozef Dumoulin. Besides being a master drummer, he is also an electronics expert artist and an exquisite recording an mixing engineer (cfr. « 21 Emanations » Octurn).
