Artist Biography by Steve Huey
Dedicated to preserving America's jazz heritage, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (formerly known as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) is a key component of New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center program, serving as the highly versatile house band for a wide variety of concert events. The 15-piece orchestra maintains a heavy touring schedule, devoting about six months annually to appearances around the U.S. and at prominent international venues. Additionally, the JLCO participates in many Jazz at Lincoln Center educational events (for both advanced and younger students), and records occasionally, both as their own entity and as a backing group for artistic director Wynton Marsalis.
Portraits by Ellington The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was founded in 1988 and in its early years was often conducted by David Berger. Marsalis was hired as the group's artistic director in 1991, and under his influence the group's historical bent blossomed, paying particular attention to the Duke Ellington oeuvre. Indeed, their annual Ellington concerts have become cultural staples for many New Yorkers, and the group's first recording -- made under Berger's direction -- was 1992's Portraits by Ellington. Still, the JLCO doesn't treat jazz as a museum exhibit; it has commissioned a number of new, in-the-tradition works specifically for the group. Over the course of the '90s, the JLCO augmented their regular concert, touring, and educational activities with international television appearances and special collaborative performances with various symphony orchestras. In the late '90s, the group began to appear more frequently on record as Marsalis began using them for ambitiously expansive projects such as 1997's Jump Start and Jazz, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields, 1999's Sweet Release & Ghost Story and Big Train. Also in 1999, the JLCO celebrated Duke Ellington's centennial with the concert album, Live in Swing City: Swingin' with the Duke.
Wynton Marsalis: All Rise During the 2000s, Marsalis continued to work closely with the JLCO, releasing such albums as 2002's orchestral-themed All Rise, 2005's Don't Be Afraid: The Music of Charles Mingus, and 2006's collaboration with Ghanaian drum master Yacub Addy, Congo Square. In 2015, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra showcased their love of the Afro-Cuban tradition with Live in Cuba, a two-disc release featuring the ensemble's first ever performances in Cuba. Later that same year, the Orchestra released Big Band Holiday, a collection of jazz arrangements of classic songs of the Christmas season. In 2016, the JLCO brought out The Abyssinian Mass, a recording of a 2013 piece by Marsalis that explored the relationship between secular and sacred music in the African-American community. The JLCO teamed up with pianist and bandleader Jon Batiste to record 2017's The Music of John Lewis, a tribute to the work of the founder and musical director of the celebrated jazz ensemble the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Few captured the sleek, swinging sophistication of jazz better than pianist, composer, and bandleader John Lewis, who had a long, deep, personal relationship with Jazz at Lincoln Center. “He used to always call our program a miracle,” says Wynton Marsalis. “He used to always say, ‘Keep that miracle going.’”
In 2013, when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis set out to honor the legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s maestro, they teamed up with New Orleans’ own Jon Batiste. The bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a prodigious pianist in his own right, Batiste joined the JLCO to tackle some of Lewis’s most iconic tunes during a sold-out concert in Rose Theater, the House of Swing.
From the blistering bebop of “Two Bass Hit” to the down-home blues of “2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West”—from small group configurations to the big band might of the full JLCO—The Music of John Lewis captures the elegance and soulfulness of Lewis’s daring compositions. The record also includes a four-movement suite pulled from the Modern Jazz Quartet’s classic recording, The Comedy.
“The depth of his belief makes his music timeless,” Batiste says of Lewis. “For artists, what remains impactful and meaningful in one’s art depends on the accuracy and intensity of your insights. Mr. Lewis's music is still with us, and it is an honor to place my artistry in the tradition of serving it. So put on this record, listen with your eyes closed, and engage your imagination.”

Jazz with A Classical Wink: Lincoln Center's Tribute
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
The crisp precision of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra honors one of the jazz giants, composer-pianist and noted leader of the innovative Modern Jazz Quartet, John Lewis (1920-2001). His approach with the MJQ, a Third Stream understanding, was chamber jazz, a unified quartet of double bass, piano, drums, and vibraphone swinging and meshing jazz with the interplay of a classical piano quartet. Indeed, classical formats as fugues and rondos appeared in concerts, but his ear extended also to Django's pulsing beats and hot melodies, bebop, and traditional New Orleans blues. Wynton Marsalis, with his own Ellingtonesque experiments into classical suites, ballets, quartets, symphonies, and masses, coupled with the Orchestra's studied technique provide a sympathetic homage. Whether full orchestra, solo, or small ensemble pieces, these live concert sessions are deeply satisfying.
Clarinet [Victor Goines], guitar [Doug Wamble, guest], and piano [Jon Batiste, guest] are soloists in the opening track, 2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West, a soulful 12-bar blues. The full orchestra is next in Animal Dance, with appropriate dissonant braying and roaring. The famous Lewis composition, Django, has Batiste alone at his piano in a grand but also witty interpretation, meshing a 19th century classical European salon with a Southern delta saloon. Marsalis and his trumpet joins Ted Nash, alto saxophone, and Chris Crenshaw on trombone in Delaunay's Dilemma, this particular Delaunay being Charles, co-leader of the Hot Club de France. The bebop track bounces along cheerfully. The next four pieces are taken from the MJQ album The Comedy, a suite of seven, very classical influenced compositions, and features Batiste: La Cantatrice; Piazza Navona (with Marsalis); Pulcinella; and Spanish Steps. Marsalis briefly discusses the work of John Lewis, and the album concludes with Two Bass Hit, with Dizzy Gillespie and Gil Fuller's arrangement and Carlos Henriquez, bass, Marsalis, and Batiste, soloists. The album is a very fast 51 minutes.
