Reunion albums so often fail to satisfy long-time fans, especially if a band's output was 1 or 2 good albums and originally released 30 years ago. Many times they seem lackluster, missing some key ingredient that made them so special when you first heard them... And you can't totally avoid wondering "what if..."
Sweetbottom, a semi-obscure jazz/rock band from 1970's Wisconsin, released one terrific self-titled album on their private label (named after the band) in 1977, and a slightly reworked, rearranged version of the same album re-titled "Angels of the Deep" for Elektra in 1978. A couple more albums followed for Elektra, each one moving closer to mainstream pop/jazz and further from their "progressive" roots.
Of all their LPs, the one to own is the eponymous debut, if you can find it. As luck would have it, I just purchased a copy on eBay for $7 and shipping and I'm waiting for delivery as I write, still somewhat in shock over my good fortune. "Sweetbottom" (1977) is a classic slice of American fusion. And the fact that Daryl Stuermer, long-time Genesis touring member, is the main guitarist on the album with his brother Duane Stuermer handling bass makes it even "sweeter". So what would a live reunion sound like after 25 years?
Sweetbottom is back!
This CD has no business being as great as it is. It simply rocks! The band sounds very tight and so well balanced sonically, it's hard to believe it's the same band. And to my ears, these don't sound like songs from their early days - they sound like brand new compositions that have all the fire and inspiration of their heyday, but with even more of qualities that make Sweetbottom so special. This live reunion is just light years better than I expected.
If you're into the trail-blazing sounds of 1970's jazz-rock fusion, this CD is a MUST. And if you're into that select bunch of fusion artists that often expand their sound into symphonic rock and other progressive realms, your ship has arrived. Climb aboard and enjoy the ride.
