The North Norwegian Jazz Forum (NNJF) is a regional organization catering to the interest of big bands, jazz clubs and jazz musicians in Northern Norway. NNJF celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2014.The three members who comprise the board of directors each come from one of the three northernmost counties in Norway. NNJF is responsible for the release of Distant Reports (Gemini Records) in 2001; in 2010 the book Nordlands trompet - nordnorsk jazz gjennom 90 or (MARGbok) was published on the initiative of NNJF and penned by Jan Ditlev Hansen. Why Distant Reports No. 2?
In collaboration with Marit Sandvik, I was the producer of the first Distant Reports.The work that went into selecting the music was comprehensive, and as producers, we could not help but acknowledge that many good recordings had to be omitted because of a lack of space.
The music of many of the North Norwegian bands that toured from the 1970s and onwards had never been commercially recorded. As the producer of the first CD, I had a good overview of the jazz recordings stored in the archives of NRK radio.When the sitting board of NNJF wanted to celebrate the organization's 45th anniversary in 2014, it was a pleasure to be invited to locate new jazz recordings in private hands and in public archives.
The process of selecting the music
In 2012, the current board members in NNJF contacted me with a view to producing Distant Reports No. 2. The plan for the future release was announced at NNJF's general meeting; grants were applied for, and money was set aside. It was decided that I would become the collector of recorded music submitted by musicians/bands from the three northernmost counties. Information about the project was distributed throughout the jazz community. In addition, I was asked to collect music found in NRK's archives in Vadsø, Tromsø, Bodø,Trondheim and Oslo.The deadline for submission of material for consideration was January 2014. In the end, we received more than 100 tracks representing the body of music from which we made our selections.These were then reduced to 50 recordings from which NNJF's board and I made our final selection in April. Distant Reports No. 2 had to be a double CD!
We agreed that musicians/bands from the entire northern region should be included in this documentation.We wanted to prioritize bands and musicians who did not already have much of a discography.We also wanted to include the rare recordings with that special flavour - recordings with musicians and bands that some had heard of, but had not actually heard! We also agreed to include bands and musicians who eventually also left their mark on modern-day Norwegian jazz. In addition,
there was a consensus that it would be important to document all of the publicly financed professional musicians in the field of jazz in North Norway.
An impression has been created that the jazz played by North Norwegian musicians consists of variants of bebop. Jan Ditlev Hansen discusses this in his book. What we have wanted to demonstrate I is that, like jazz music from other parts of the country, many different types of jazz have been played in the north as well: dixieland, swing, bebop, modern acoustic jazz, fusion, world music and contemporary improvisational music. In the archives of the regional offices of NRK there are many recordings of dixieland bands, certainly enough to fill several CDs; in addition, fusion has a large body of followers in several urban areas of North Norway.
Are there North Norwegian jazz performers who are not included on Distant Reports No. 2'., some will ask.Yes, of course! We were unable to include everyone we wanted to have represented. Some did not wish to be included, for various reasons; some wanted to record and release their own music; others were not satisfied with the sound quality of the old recordings that were available, and still others have never documented what they have done. In the not-too-distant past, there were few opportunities to record.
Many North Norwegian performers are well documented through their own recordings.Therefore, they were not given priority here.-And yes, the selection of music does indeed reflect the preferences of those doing the selecting.This is true of any selection process, whether it be CD tracks or pieces for a literary anthology!
Distant Reports - What does that mean?
Distant Reports has several meanings. One meaning is "reports from the periphery"; another is "the sound of gunfire from great distances".When Distant Reports was reviewed in Dagbladet byTerje Mosnes, he wrote: "North Norway has never been in the periphery in a jazz context". Agreed.There have been remarkably many jazz musicians from the sparsely populated northern region of the country whose talents have been acknowledged both nationally and internationally.
Many of us are of the opinion that the North Norwegian Jazz Forum has been partially responsible for this.The organization began already upon its inception in 1969 to offer seminars to jazz musicians in the region which allowed them to meet and learn from leading, well-known musicians.
Distant Reports received accolades in the international press. Michael Tucker, writing for Jazz Journal International (UK) quipped: "Whatever they have in the water up there, I wish they'd bottle it and send down here".
The Music
The technical quality of the recordings varies. Recordings made in I960 were done on reel-to-reel tape and with one microphone. Other recordings have almost studio quality. In some cases, the raw tracks were not mixed. In a couple of cases, the hard disk crashed and only the raw mixes remained. This is notably the case of the tunes "Hi-Fly" with Steinar Kjeldsen/Roy Nikolaisen and Odd Erik Rude Nonett.

The board members of NNJF are very pleased and grateful to all the musicians/bands that have allowed us to release their music without remuneration.
Without the technical assistance of Oyvind Dreyer, retired sound technician from NRK/Troms, this project would have been difficult to carry out. For days and days, we sat and reviewed recordings that he, as a former NRK technician, was instrumental in recording and, later, digitalizing. It was inspirational to observe his dedication during the research phase!
