Many consider the ballad to be the true measure of a player's musical maturity. If that is the case, Hubbard matured very early on. This 1997 Blue Note collection is comprised of ballads recorded by Hubbard when he was as young as 22 and no older than 26. These beautiful tracks are taken from Hubbard's earliest 1960's recordings on such Blue Note albums as HUB CAP, BREAKING POINT, and his debut OPEN SESAME.
BALLADS includes classic standards and some fresh new ballads of the time. On the essential "Body and Soul," Hubbard and his oftentimes-accomplice Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone) show subtlety beyond their years. Massaging the famous theme with his warm, clear sound and then gliding into a slight reconsideration of its classic structure, Hubbard makes a great song his own. Also appearing with Hubbard on these tracks are McCoy Tyner (piano), James Spaulding (flute), and Philly Joe Jones (drums), among others. All these players were young then, and BALLADS serves as a remarkable look at their astonishingly full-blown talents.
