Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II, better known as Donald Byrd, is a trumpeter who entered into the jazz arena as a fully-fledged musician in the mid Fifties when hard bop became the order of the day. Stylistically he sat alongside fellow horn-men Freddie Hub-bard and Clifford Brown, both of whom had greater impact on the music but never achieved the popularity Byrd acquired due to his embracing soul/funk in the Seventies. Alongside his achievements as a musician the trumpeter has long been involved in education, acquiring a whole raft of degrees (including one for law) and teaching music at various prestigious establishments, Oberlin College and Cornell University among them.
Bom in Detroit in 1932, his early studies took place at Cass Technical High School and before moving on to higher education he had already played with Lionel Hampton. More than one source has suggested he did not make his recording debut until 1955, but eight years earlier he had taken part in an obscure session for the Fortune label as part of the Robert Barnes Sextet After a spell in the United States Air Force where he became a member of the military band, Byrd started his long association with the world of academia, which resulted in his gaining degrees at both Wayne State University and the Manhattan School of Music. In 1955, while still studying at the latter, he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as a replacement for the aforementioned Clifford Brown, a hard act to follow but an opportunity Byrd grabbed with both hands.
The great drummer, a demanding but very fair leader, clearly realised the potential the trumpeter offered and would have taken note of the company he was already keeping which included Jackie McLean, Kenny Clarke and the Adderley brothers. The year of 1955 proved to be a good year for Byrd, for he also led a number of recording dates under his own name, one of which featured Blakey performing as a sideman. Although he left the Messengers the following year, he is captured on disc in a number of sessions with the ultimate hard-bop unit during twelve months that also witnessed him working with Hank Mofaley, Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver. The 'Byrd In Flight' disc, assembled over three dates in 1960, again has a strong support cast with pianist Duke Pearson and drummer Lex Humphries ever-present Jackie McLean and Hank Mobley share front-line duties in the two separate quintets, with bass split between Doug Watkins and Reggie Workman. The standard 'Little Boy Blue' is the only concession to the tried and trusted, as Pearson and Byrd supply the rest of the material. Critic Scott Yanow's evaluation of the album as having 'its own personality and purpose' followed by the assertion 'An excellent example of early-Sixties hard bop' is perfectly apposite.
After producing a number of further releases for Blue Note under his leadership, not to mention his appearances as a sideman for the same company, Byrd decamped to Europe in 1962 in order to study composition. Upon his return to the States he took up the first of a series of teaching posts which eventually led to an hiatus in his recorded work. One date with Dexter Gordon and two with Wes Montgomery/Oliver Nelson was the sum total of his studio output in 1965, with only one further studio appearance in the next twelve months.
In the late Sixties Byrd split his time between the academic world and performing the music he loved. But the new decade was only in its infancy when he took a decided U-turn and immersed himself in what loosely became known as jazz-fusion, with its orientation towards pop and soul rather than jazz. He formed a group from his students at Howard University and, as the Blackbyrds, they hit the big time with a series of successful albums, not forgetting singles successes with 'Walking In Rhythm'.
Byrd had found a new audience, and it would be the late Eighties before he returned to the jazz fold, his technique having been neglected but still feeling the need to stretch himself. He continues playing today, and is currently an artist-in-residence at Delaware State University.

Some sources suggest that Byrd's first regular band was formed in 1958, a quintet co-led by baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, but for a brief period prior to this he had shared the leadership of a group known as the Jazz Lab Quintet with alto-player Gigi Gryce. The JLQ recorded a number of tracks for the Columbia label which were well received by the jazz press.
When coming to record 'Byrd In Hand', his second album under his own name for Blue Note released in 1959, Byrd had matured into a fine musician whose dependability on any given occasion helped to maintain a steady workload. The line-up assembled for the date is an excellent one, with both saxophonists complimenting the leaders' consistently adventurous solos. There is little safety in the material, for apart from the standard 'Witchcraft' the tunes were freshly minted, three from the leader and two courtesy of pianist Walter Davis Jr.
