5.0 out of 5 stars - A Grand Master re-invents standards What jazz is about... - November 17, 2003
By: NDBx
George Coleman is one of the overlooked grand masters of the saxophone. He shone brightly on those early sixties recordings with Miles Davis often stealing the limelight and he hasn't slowed any since.
Rarely do you find saxophonists that can play so well on tenor, alto and soprano saxophone without losing something, here is one cat that play 'em all.
At first you would see the song titles and say... these all have been done so often...another collection of standards. Don't take a pass on this one. Mr. Coleman approaches this with such a fresh perspective. He improvises so well. He turns these pieces this way and that creating a prism effect and in so doing presenting them as the superb vehicles for improvisation that they are.
Surprising is how good Mr. Coleman is on soprano. His tenor work is, as always, excellent. His alto work may start a whole new career for him.
Mr. Coleman is well accompanied here with Ray Drummond on Bass, Harold Mabern on piano and the late great Billy Higgins on drums.
These guys swing, they cook and they keep the fresh spirit of jazz alive.
Mr. Coleman plays like a man a quarter of his age on this. He could teach the young cats a few new tricks.
This one bears repeated playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A Swinging Jazz Quartet Of The Contemporary Scene! - November 25, 2009
By: Andre S. Grindle, TOP 1000 REVIEWER
WOWEEE!!! Well my dad loaned my this CD after hearing George Coleman on Miles Davis's Seven Steps to Heaven and it just blew me away. These people: Coleman, Harold Mabern on piano, Ray Drummond on the bass and the exciting drummer Billy Higgins smoke, burn and swing from number to number here. There are lenghy treatments of standards such as "Lush Life" and "My Romance" that give...well this powerhouse acoustic trio something people who aren't exactly into jazz something even they might not expect:HEAVY ELECTRICITY! Considering this is a fairly early all digital acoustic jazz recording the sound and incredible and you feel your actually moving in and around the musicians as they do their thing. While staying true to the themes of these tunes the interpretations are very radically improvised and the strong level of excitment energizes that sensability as well. Even though it's very brief "The Sheik Of Araby" is baught right to life with some inspired, lyrical soloing and Billy Higgins really giving the rhythm a life almost outside the quartet setting. "Conrad","You Mean So Much To Me" and "Old Folks" are originals that are so heavily strong and vibrant they actually sound like reinvented standards as well. The tone of Coleman's sax on this cuts is so lively and strong themselves and can actually work itself into the many kinds of tonal qualities he brings to his playing. Sometimes he's right on fire, other times breathy and sometimes quietly in between both. Lovers of "hot music",or "swinging jazz" as some call it will feel right at home here and the music and the tunes themselves just sweep you right up.

George Coleman: My Horns of Plenty (2002)
By MARK F. TURNER, Published: November 4, 2002
This reissue of George Coleman’s recording My Horns of Plenty is a real treat for those wanting to hear the sheer talent of a lesser known saxophonist. Coleman enjoyed his greatest exposure when Miles Davis, who had a knack for surrounding himself with great musicians, featured him early on in his great '60s quintet. But since then, Coleman's musicianship has not waned. The skill and depth of Coleman's playing is clearly evident on this 1991 reissue. Equally adept on soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone, Coleman possesses a smooth and dynamic presence. With speed and poise he shines on the Billy Strayhorn composition “Lush Life”. His tenor is as silky as butter on the classic “My Romance” and his own compositions give ample room for band members to show their skills on “You Mean So Much To Me.” With great tunes, an equally talented band, and an outstanding voice, it's nice to discover a cornucopia of good music on Mr. Coleman’s My Horns of Plenty.

My Horns of Plenty album by George Coleman was released Jun 11, 2002 on the Dreyfus label. On this excellent set, George Coleman plays his usual tenor on four tunes, alto on "Old Folks," and soprano on "Conrad." With the assistance of pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Billy Higgins, Coleman is heard at the top of his game, coming up with interesting variations on lengthy version of "Lush Life," "My Romance" and "Old Folks." Recommended for hard bop and post-bop collectors. My Horns of Plenty songs ~ Scott Yanow
