Bassist Richard Davis doesn't always get the chance to record as a leader – but when he does, the result is always something special! This late 90s session has Davis in some very heady territory – recording in Paris with a group that features Ricky Ford on tenor, Curtis Clark on piano, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – a lineup that's decidedly more out than some of Richard's other work of the decade! Ford's soulful tenor lines are a nice grounding for the record – allowing Clark some of his usual freedoms on piano, although at a few points he also hits a surprising groove. Davis' bass is often present in a gentle way – not as boldly direct a leadership as you might get from other bassists, showing once again that Richard's a player with a very magnanimous personality – one who provides inspiration in ways that often let his associates shine even more brightly than himself.
