Об альбоме (сборнике)
Unlike the majority of the recent CTI reissues, this one is made up of original material and is none the worse for this. The other players are a veritable who' s who of session musicians associated with this style, and indeed, with this particular label. Apparently this record proved to be not so popular at the time of its release - hopefully this new appearance will redress the balance. It really doesn't get much better than this!
This wonderful record has a permanent place in jazz history as the one that NEVER seems to be included in the Wynton Marsalis discographies. Sorry, Wynton, here's the hard evidence that you once played fusion jazz with Stanley Clarke!
"The Complete Recordings" is a somewhat grandiose (original) title for this reissue of Fuse One and Silk, as there's nothing here that wasn't on both albums when issued originally as singles back in 1980 and 1981, and neither was particularly long. There are certainly no "never-before-released" bonus tracks to be found here. Why they've now retitled it "From Bohemia's Castles", I really can't imagine, as there's nothing either Bohemian or medieval about any of it. That aside, the first one was/is very good, whilst Silk is a pretty good follow up, if not quite as good.
Fuse One was an exciting forum of NYC musicians of the day, comprising people such as Stanley Clarke, Joe Farrell, Ndugu Chancler, Ronnie Foster, Jeremy Wall and even John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, not to mention Jorge Dalto, Will Lee, Lenny White, Don Grusin and Victor Feldman ~ a distinguished cast indeed. From the opening bars of Grand Prix, the first album had a good strong feeling of energy and forward drive, kicking off the new decade in fine style, and it didn't run out of steam from there on. Though very much of its era and now perhaps a little dated, if you were there at the time, as they say, this is a moderately important milestone on the semi-smooth jazz fusion road.
Silk features several different musicians who, whilst still respected in jazz circles, brought to the proceedings a slightly different flavour. They're all good names, mind ~ people such as Eric Gale, Dave Valentin, Marcus Miller and trumpet players Tom Browne and Wynton Marsalis. Even George Benson plays on one track and, importantly, this second roster still includes the redoubtable Stanley Clarke.
For my money, the first album remains the better of the two, though Silk isn't at all bad. If you're going to buy one of them you may as well have the pair on a single CD, if only for the sake of completeness ~ it's a pretty good 70 minute / 11 track package. If I could split my rating, it'd be 4* for Fuse One and 3* for Silk.
