Chico Freeman (tripling on this album on tenor, soprano and bass clarinet) made many records from 1977-84, and all are worth picking up by fans of adventurous jazz. Freeman's warm tone and knowledge of more traditional areas of jazz make even his more abstract flights seem fairly accessible. Joined by vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, bassist Rick Rozie and drummer Don Moye on this somewhat obscure effort, Freeman stretches out on lengthy renditions of his originals "No Time Left," "Uhmla," and a briefer "Circle." - AMG
An urgent title, and an urgent-sounding record from Chico Freeman – one that has the reedman blowing some sharply-focused lines with lots of angular tones! Freeman plays tenor, soprano sax, and clarinet – and the group features Jay Hoggard on vibes, Rick Rozie on bass, and Famadou Don Moye on drums – the last of whom really rattles the cage nicely on the first two tracks – both long numbers driven by a bit of frenetic energy, which gets some sharper tones than usual out of Hoggard's vibes. Things lay out a bit more introspectively on the shorter last track – which has a slightly airier tone overall. - DGA
