The Holywell Music Room is the oldest music room in Europe.
Under its original name of the "Oxford Musick Room", the Holywell was opened in 1748.
The building of the Holywell was funded by subscription; the total cost of £1263 and 10 shillings included £100 for purchase of the land.
The unique acoustic qualities of the Holywell have attracted renowned musicians worldwide to perform there.
242 years after its opening the Holywell was home to a rare and beautiful concert of improvised music. Howard Riley, one of only a handful of pianists capable of doing so, drew on the full potential of the Steinway; Paul Rutherford, Lol Coxhill and George Haslam gave equally memorable peformances and the Holywell acoustics responded magnificently.
The concert was recorded by Michael Gerzon as part of his extensive documentation of live improvised music in Oxford and London. His first recordings in the Holywell date back to 1967. For the present concert a simple stereo-pair microphone technique was used to capture the sound of the room as well as the musicians.
