Thomas Clausen born 1949 Pianist, composer & arranger
According to Gyldendals “The Great Danish Encyclopaedia”: “Danish jazz piano player and composer, who inspired by both jazz and recent European composition from the beginning of the 1980’s has become one of the important musicians in European jazz. He’s equally appreciated as a solo piano player, leader of his own trio and Quartet. Further he has worked as a composer for large ensembles in a way, that reveals Alban Berg as a main influence.”
So far for the encyclopaedia…..But there are other things to say about Thomas Clausen. Thomas Clausen was very young when he began playing with the great players of jazz. His energetic but lyrical piano playing was discovered by Dexter Gordon (1969); at the same time he began working with Palle Mikkelborg. And soon he began playing regularly with all the top musicians in Denmark He managed to comp a number of international jazz stars – at “Jazzhus Montmartre”: Ben Webster, Jan Garbarek, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Jackie Mclean, Just to name a few…. In the middle of the 80’s he was a regular member of the Peter Herboltzheimer International Big Band in Germany.
In 1978 he started his own group Mirror, which also recorded his first LP with own compositions. ( “Mirror”/CBS/1979).Here the music had already taken a strongly melodic turn after the studies of modern compositional technique. In 1979 he formed his first jazz trio, which had NHØP on bass. By mid 90’s he was moving into new directions when he began collaborations with Brazilian musicians.
In 2012 Thomas Clausen began recording and touring with Chuck Israels

An album that's hitting strong on just about every level – not just the well-crafted piano work of Thomas Clausen, but also the full, rich bass of Jesper Lundgaard – who seems to match every moment of Clausen's inspiration, and fill things in with these tones that are completely captivating! Drummer Billy Hart makes a strong contribution too – that new sense of space and swing that we've heard on some of his own great records of late – and the group also gets wonderful tenor from Tomas Franck, who brings an edge that we don't always hear on Clausen's trio dates – a really wonderful addition to the group.
______________
In 1980 did Thomas Clausen LP'a Rain with NHØP on bass and Aage Tanggard on drums. A plaque with today's ears sounds bedaget. However, it does not that I at any time will highlight it as one of the strongest Danish piano trio plates. Now Clausen once again current with a rainy plate. Blue Rain, with strong backing by Jesper Lundgaard on bass and Billy Hart on drums. This time, there is also a sax. The almost Danish saxophonist, the swede Tomas Franck is to ensure and provide a completely different atmosphere than at the 35-year-old regnvejrsplade.
Where the nordic tone previously characterized the plates in the Thomas Clausen's career, it is this plate a more outgoing and brash Clausen we meet. This is largely due to the interaction with Tomas Franck, who does not hesitate to play a safe and empowering Coltrane-inspired sax. Billy Hart touches thoroughly in the rhythms while Jesper Lundgaard is in his usual role as the man that holds together on the foundation. It is a pleasure to listen to Clausen on this plate, where he has written most of the material. There is a Monk and Bud in an upright position spirit. A lovely good-humoured plate.
